Advise please: Standing Charge for Empty property

I own a property which was previously rented out and has been empty for 6 months .
The energy supplier SSE who billed my tenant are trying to charge me £180 for standing charges during this period.
I have not signed an agreement with SSE. Am I legally liable for these fees?
thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
Nobody signs gas/electricity contracts these days. However anyone using gas/electricity from a supplier(SSE in this case) has entered a legally binding deemed contract and is bound by the conditions of that tariff.
Unless you cancelled the contract when the tenant left and either got another supplier, or had the gas and electricity disconnected(at a cost) you are liable for the standing charge.
There are suppliers with a zero standing charge.0
