When the "Lock The Taskbar" option is ticked, I can still open all the applications that are running, I shouldn't be able to.

The Taskbar locks when it feels like it. Ctrl-Alt-Delete is the only way I can unlock it when it plays up. It does it again and again..

Locking the taskbar doesn't stop you doing anything with the applications, it stops you moving the whole taskbar to a different location, or, if you use it, moving the icons in your quicklaunch around.

Do you mean your computer freezes and wont swap window easily?

Oh ok, you're right then! I thought "Locking The Taskbar" stopped me from clicking on Windows. So, Dunce Cap for me then.... :)

Yes, the computer freezes and won't let me swap windows.

In that case, its beyond me to diagnose at a distance, but I am sure one of the brainier ones on here can help now we have clarified the problem.

    Anyone?
  • Ah, I think I know what you mean: our taskbar did the same a while back. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what I did to resolve it, but I've kept a file with the suggestions, so see if either of these helps. For now though, if it freezes (you might know this anyway), you can still switch between screens by using Alt-Tab (repeatedly if necessary).

    1. (I think this is what sorted it for us) We have a Brother printer and on the Task Manager it always came up with loads of duplicate entries called BrMfcWnd.exe. Deleting a few of those made the taskbar 'unfreeze', so see if you have something similar happening (I mean multiple entries in Task Manager).

    2. (I got this from a website, and just copying it as it was typed there. As far as I remember this didn't work for us, but you never know, it might for you.)
"Here's what I did, just in case people are having the same problems...
I'm running Windows XP professional, and the problem has nothing to do with RAM (although, sometimes it is the problem)
    so
access ur connection (either by clicking on the icon on the taskbar or just start>>my connections>>connectionname)
click on 'properties', then 'networking', then select 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' and click 'properties'.
make sure 'obtain an ip address automatically' and 'obtain DNS server address automatically' are checked. I guess it woud work also if u actually had the IP's, i'm not sure.
    click on 'advanced'
click on the tab saying 'dns'
make sure the following stuff are checked or selected:
'append primary and connection especific DNS sufixes'
'append parent sufixes of the primary DNS sufix'
'Register this connection address in DNS'
'Use this connection's DNS sufix in DNS registration'
    go on WINS tab
make sure u have 'enable NETbios over TCP/IP' selected.
I'm not really sure what makes everything work... I guess it's the one regarding DNS addressing...
anyway, after doing this, my taskbar didn't freeze anymore."

No duplicate entries in Task Manager :)

I assume XP Professional is slightly different from the "ordinary" version, I don't have My Connections as an option.

I can get Tools>Internet Options>Connections, but after that I'm stumped.

I've had a few "The Memory Cannot Be "Read"" errors recently, so I'm wondering if it is a RAM issue. Uh-oh.
