    and downright dumb. Get it?

I agree. It is dumb. But on his behalf not Sky's!

Sky probably won't go to court. They will just sell the debt on.

But the letter was sent out to Sky. Although he did not sign it, he did authorise it and it was sent on his instructions. Surely, this will hold in court?

Based on this I can sign a letter on your behalf & tell your mobile phone contract holder, for example, that you no longer want a contract... if they said ok & cut your off would you be happy?

He could have rang them earlier and gave the person that sent the letter authorisation to deal with the sky account. I do this with most of my accounts for anything billed so my wife can deal with them.

...Usually works for changes to an account, but many organisations will only accept cancellation instructions from the account holder personally.
For instance,my ISP ,Plusnet, state that somewhere in the t & cs and when we were cancelling car insurance recently, my wife had to speak to the Company even tho' I'm listed as authorised.

I guess he did not sign it as he left the country in a hurry. I think he asked someone to write in a cancellation on his behalf (pp the letter).

Dumb they are, IMO. Because it is unlikely they are going to get paid by this guy; he is one mean dude and he will probably go all the way in courts. On the other hand if Sky had cancelled the contract, the other people would have continued it (or taken out a new contract) but sky would not have any of that. Thats a loss of income stream in anyone's bookand downright dumb. Get it?
It's called the Data Protection Act, Sky are fully covered in case this fool takes it to court. It's actually illegal for them to act on a letter like that and can result in very heavy fines. He will end up paying full costs and his outstanding debt.

    Get it?

The projects I work on are exactly this, we only accept cancellations by phone as well (although you wont find an easier phone cancellation process anywhere else).

There was an article 3 years ago about Sky changing their cancellations process to phone only and making it much clearer. (Hmmm...)

No - because the account holder did not sign it! You could have crafted a letter without his authority asking for full Sports and Movies and 'pp'd' it - they need proof, and a phone call will do it once you/he passes security. I certainly know it won't go to court - his credit file will be fried for non payment and the the debt collection starts.

I'd get him to pay and move on.
