£550 isn't a huge amount for rent so if you are struggling when you have already cut back to bare minimum it means that even on minimum wage one or both of you are only working part time if just one of you has a 30 hour contract at MW you would be taking home over £800 which would be manageable with that rent. Add the second part or full time wage on and you are in a better position.
If one or both of you are only part time then you need to look for something full time or take on a second job, it doesn't matter what it is, even working in McDonald's it would bring in an extra wage to help you.
How short are you each month on rent? Could you get your children to share and get a lodger for the other room?

Are you in a fixed term contract, or rolling periodic?
You MUST pay your rent and council tax. Other bills, even utilities are lower priorities. Are you paying council tax over 10 or 12 months? If 10 months, then see about changing it to 12.
And, you're going to have to put your wedding abroad plans on the back burner until you and partner are bringing in more money and you can afford to save.0 -

Not sure how old you are but if you are over 25 and working full time then from 1st April (new tax year) you can do a claim for working tax credits. It can be based on the income you expect to earn in 17/180

Around here the majority of private landlords don't use websites to advertise rentals - the old style methods seem to work fine. Try noticeboards, local papers, word of mouth (hugely successful, tell everyone you're looking, when shopping, in the pub, at work, bin man - everyone you come across, however casual the acquaintance) put wanted ads in the paper, on noticeboards etc.
I've never once used an agency when renting, always the above. No credit checks etc etc. Meet the landlord, make a good impression, invite him/her round to see your current living style.
Other people on here seem to know you better and their advice looks really good too, it's a matter of prioritising.

I hope the OP comes back to fill in a few of the blanks here. For me something just doesn't sound right if they're struggling that much when both are working. rent isn't crazily high and one of them is considering a wedding abroad whilst they're dipping into the "leccy money" for the rent (I actually responded on their wedding thread yesterday!).
I think there has to be more to this situation than we're hearing - there was also a new baby mentioned in an older thread - is this one of the children that comes to stay at weekends and OH now has a new partner?0 -
If this isn't a windup, does the landlady have a cheaper property available ? Perhaps tenants ,who now need more space, would like to exchange.0
