Underground Basment

Greetings,

I am interested in building an underground basement but not under my house. I am going to build it where my garden is and then rebuild my garden as it was before. My question is if I use masonry blocks for 2.5 meters (8.2 Feet). Do I need to use Rebars and If 'Yes' how deep should they be installed?

Thanks In Advance.

I much prefer underground basements above, ground basements really make me sad...

Really don't even think about doing this by yourself, you'll kill someone.

    Get a structural engineer.

I'd recommend you think very carefully about this - it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Why are you wanting an underground basement anyway ( as opposed to the "above ground" type LOL ) ?

People who build these usually get arrested, buried under rubble or drowned.

Perhaps safer and less expensive to build above ground.

But if set on one and have the money Google is your friend , just get experts in as in here, http://www.londonandkent.co.uk/residential/house-extensions-and-conversions/garden-basements/

Buildings around here (London) are worth around £1000 per sq foot. So, adding a basement at say £200-300 psf makes financial sense.

A neighbour 4 houses down the road has demolished his house. He then piled all round his proposed basement. Filled the pile holes with reinforced concrete. Only then did he start digging out the basement. It costs a fortune to get rid of the spoil.

He has had loads of trouble over this. He's on his third load of contractors, and the hole he dug kept filling with water. 18 months into this project, and the roof of the new house has only just gone on.

The OP should understand that the earth exerts a lot of inward pressure, and he needs a very strong structure to withstand that. Blockwork, LOL!

  • So, I can build it with masonry blocks? I am building a small building not a big one. So, I don't really need any big machinery, and one more question: What is the lifespan of the masonry block basement build?

Thank you again for your answers, guys.

Should last at least 100 years, providing you use sky hooks for added support.

You can only build an above ground basement with masonry blocks...
