Brunch in Griffith Park (Griffiths park trail cafe)

then walk up to the observatory (good place to see the Hollywood sign and the city)

then to, California science museum (see the space shuttle) and

then down to Santa Monica beach for a wander and Dinner.

Personally, I loved Universal Studios, particularly at sunset. Also did went for lunch at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where the first Oscar ceremony was held, and which is opposite Mann's Chinese Theatre, then caught the Red Trolley Bus down to Santa Monica. Drinks in Ye Olde King's Head, then walk down to the beach.

    For other ideas...

Some suggestions are a tad ambitious, imo.

Yes, it's possible to do most things IF you have a full day spare. But no-one has factored in the airport arrival and baggage reclaim, clearing security, picking up your rental car (45 minutes can be wasted here) and then driving to the first location. If that is Grifiths Park, be aware that the drive up the winding hill (with little opportunity to turn round) can snake along for a frustrating amount of time (we were there in Feb last year. It will be worse now due to the popularity of the film La La Land which uses the park and the observatory as a location).

If I were you, I would pick one place (Venice beach or Mulholland Drive or Santa Monica) and relax there. You will find plenty to do and places to eat without driving around too much.

Let us know how you get on.

I'd just do Uber instead of hiring a car.

I had a spare Saturday on a business trip to Pasadena last year. Think we left Pasadena around 10am and arrived back around 7pm.

We used just the LA Metro and a single bus operated by some other company (around $7 on a TAP card seemed to cover it all).

First stop was California Science Center (including the space shuttle). Then off to Griffith Observatory (there's a bus from Hollywood Boulevard directly there and it's very cheap, but took absolutely ages as the driver got lost then we got stuck in traffic going up the hill). Walked round there and had a coffee overlooking the Hollywood sign (I'd recommend this, some great photo opportunities). Then walked down the hill back to Hollywood Boulevard to walk along the stars (it's actually quite disappointing really).

On a different trip, I did Santa Monica beach and pier. Would definitely recommend seeing this.

We were there 6 days so didn't explore the public transport option, but the advice above seems very sound. I think if we ever went again, this is the way we would see the sights.

The rental car was good for us at the time because we also wanted to go out to the shopping malls at Culver City, plus the city centre drive around Rodeo Drive, Wilshire Blvd, Sunset Blvd and then a look round Beverley Hills. So much to see!
