  • As for a replacement, yes honda would be the way to go. Or anything Jappy. As they last. And work! lol
  • I recently bought a 1999 Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel estate.I had trouble starting in early mornings but OK if I first tried later in the day. I had new glow plugs fitted but it still took a while to start.I took it to a local mechanic who did an engine flush and new oil. He put in another starter as he said the clutch thingy on the old starter wasn't working properly.
It is better than it was but can take a few tries to get it going. I sometimes turn the ignition on glow plug dash light goes on wait a few seconds then turn it off and back on, press accelerator half down wait til dash light for glow plugs goes off count about 7 seconds and turn the key.Usually that works.
My mechanic says he half presses the accelerator on all diesels on a cold morning.Others have said that's not necessary.

On my previous diesel car a Vauxhall all I did was turn ignition wait til glow plug lights went off waited for the relay to click turned the key and that was it.Kept away from the accelerator pedal.

I just hope this Peugeot is OK when it gets really cold. The outside trim on it is really cheap and plasticky but the engine when going seems to work just fine.

I probably should have got another Vauxhall diesel.

    Still fingers crossed.
  • Thanks everyone
we've got a few things to try now. Really good of you all to help. :D
Fannyhill I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too.
We always seem to have trouble with cars. The best one we had was a 7 seater montego countryman but it got to the stage that whenever we closed the doors bits kept falling off. :D Happy days...x

have you tried changing the fuel filter?, garages are next to useless nowerdays, my sister had the exact problem with a petrol megane, dealers and specialists couldnt fix it, all it was was a split vaccum hose to the distributor-trained chimps are what you usually get in dealers nowerdays, im not familiar with renault diesels but i would change the fuel filters(previous owner may have put chip fat or veggie oil in it), there wil be a cold start mechanism on it which will allow extra diesel into the engine when cold- usually a 5th injector driven by a thermostat, worth checking out also. the biggie could be glazed bores, a common problem with older diesels cause by excessive use of "easy-start", also having the injectors cleaned is another idea, if your near watford i know a guy who specialises in diesels and is very good
