  • How old is the car in question? Does the glow plug light go out, then start to flash...?!

They don't flash it just lights up for a few seconds then goes out then comes on again at different times. The car is an 02 so 5 years old ish. We bought it last year. Wish we'd gone for a ford like my brother suggested x

  • 02. So old shape? If the light comes on while driving, it sounds like an immobiliser problem then...
  • Would that not have been picked up with the diagnostic checks? Could be worth mentioning to Renault though. Thanks I appreciate your help. x
Also as you're in the trade which second hand car would you recommend. Maybe a Honda? x

  • Try spraying WD40 around the glow plug area including any electrical wires. Does this problem only occur in the winter time?
If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.

If no luck try searching for Renault owners forums. Someone else will more than likely have experienced this problem and have managed to fix it and be kind enough to let you know how they did it (hopefully).

I'm not familiar with the Renault 1.9 diesel engine, but when I had the same symptoms with my 1.5 Peugeot diesel (poor cold starting, OK when hot), it turned out that the valve clearances were too tight (clearances had reduced to due to wear over time).

Little or no valve clearance can cause poor compression, making it very difficult to start a cold diesel engine.

As soon as the valve clearances were adjusted correctly, the car started (and has continued to start) first time, every time.

Assuming the valve clearances can be adjusted on the Renault 1.9 diesel engine, it would probably be worth asking a good mechanic to check the engine compression and/or valve clearances when cold.

Im not sure about renaults but vauxhalls Have rubber "Spill" Pipes from the injectors, if these split (normaly due to age) your engine wil take in air not fuel and cause bad start / lumpy running this may be somethign to look at ??.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
