Welcome to our world

I see the unions have said that the 1% pay increase to public sector workers is a disgrace and left many feeling took for granted. Ive worked for the same company 30 years and last pay rise we had was 10 years ago final salary pension ripped from under our feet at the same time and a miserly 5% paid by the employer into our present pension scheme. Plus we got to work till were ready to drop not take a nice pension at 55 and as ive said before many having more income from their public sector pensions than if they continued working whilst us idiots continue paying for them So tell me all those bleating on their 1% pay increase would you like to join us in the private sector ?..................As i thought so carry on looking forward to a nice pot at 55 to enjoy life with..................we cant

Us under 30 will be lucky to retire at all. Problem is with all pay rises is where the money is going to come from. I honestly do not know what the answer to it all is mind

    A miserly 5%? *bitter laugh*

Try 3%, and THAT is generous in the voluntary sector! (And in my last job, 3 of 22 staff took that 3%, which they had to match from their own salary. The rest, with one exception, said that they couldn't afford to.)

This country appears to have devolved into a bitter pot-peeking competition where people are so bitter about what someone else is fighting to obtain they forget to stand up for themselves.

You've worked for the same company for 30 years despite knowing it would not be to your benefit but theirs. I know whose fault that is and it's not public sector workers.

I choose to work in the private sector, I also choose to acknowledge that the decision is mine and I do not begrudge anyone fighting their own corner.

If that is the normal standard of your written communication, it is not surprising that you have not had a pay rise in ten years.

Leaving aside the myriad factual inaccuracies in your post, it takes a certain type of person to see someone with a better deal than them and proceed to try and bring the other person down rather than raising their own deal. You seem like a thoroughly unpleasant person.

I was always under the impression public sector staff were paid less but the beneefits were better? I have no idea how true that is as I have never worked in the public sector.

It could be worse, I am self employed and historically we have always paid a little less tax as we do not get SSP, Maternity/Paternity leave but the government appear to want us to pay the same tax and have less benefits. Added to that as an employee, you get free eye tests if you work with computers and your employee is contributing towards your pension - even if it is less than previously.

Yuo get more financial benefits than I do being self employed but you do not hear me moaning - Fingers crossed I never have to go back to being employed. If you are unhappy go and get a job in the private sector...

Life is what you make of it. If you do not like something go and change it...hippy hat off now.

I've never worked in the public sector but if I had such a bee in my bonnet as you do about how much better it is and how hard done by I am, then I'd leave the private sector and get a job in the public.

However, I suspect you'd find plenty to whinge about wherever you worked.

Depends on the role and your level. My wife works in the public sector (lower level job) and gets paid a lot more than the equivalent private sector job (even accounting for her not having a pay rise for the past 5 years) plus the additional benefits like paid sick leave, pension and longer holiday.

I work in the private sector (higher level job) and get paid a lot more than the equivalent public sector job but get less holiday, sick pay and its a private pension. To be honest i think the pay difference in my case more than makes up for the loss in benefits. personally i prefer the culture in the private sector.

    I'm a public sector worker.
1% pay rise? 1% pay rise I got this year was the first in 5 years.
Final salary pension? Ripped out from under my feet at the end of 13/14.
Nice pension at 55? I have to work until 67 to get mine, which after 17 years service is worth a staggering £5.5k per year. Granted, the employer contributions are higher than 5%, but the current value of my pot should give you an idea of how massive my salary is.
So for you bleating in the private sector, would you like join us in the public sector? We don't appear to have anything you think we have, but hey, you can moan as much as you want here too and nobody will care.

Typical race to the bottom mentality.

i also work in the public sector. i'm echoing the poster above! 1% payrise isn't even in line with inflation and rising living costs. but unlike us, you can do something about it as your private sector employee should reward good work so you're within your right to try to negotiate a payrise. we can't negotiate anything.

are you also mad that MPs got an 11% payrise? or that nurses only got 1%?
