    What would be the point in speaking to a supervisor? They don't have a system for handling cash, speaking to a supervisor won't change that. Most of these places sub contract to a local firm so paying the engineer cash would be pointless as it is paying the wrong person.

    This may be the first time OP has come across issues with not using cards or direct debits but it almost certainly won't be the last.

    Because all the other methods that have been suggested on here, perhaps should have been mentioned to the op but clearly were not?

    I haven't suggested asking to pay cash.

    Surely you have a friend or relative with a debit/credit card you could use & then give them the physical money...
