VDSL is fibre to the cabinet.

  • So I'm basically waiting to the end of the year before I can get fibre. Wondering why they don't call it FTTC?

Indeed, but no more insecure than using the public wifi in pubs, coffee shops etc.

You are warned about the security issues of such, but if not using a mobile phone, people may expect more security when working in a private building.

If the owner puts adequate wording in the rental agreement, then I don't see an issue. Individual wireless hubs in each flat with their own login and password will give a degree of protection over and above that offered by public wifi.

It is a holiday let, it does not need fibre unless ADSL is dire sub 1mb.

    ....................

If you really want to make a go of this you need to be thinking of cutting costs to what is NEEDED. I see no reason why someone on a holiday needs fibre and I can't see every customer paying for it. If you add it and put up your price then that makes you less competitive but if you are aiming this at top end of market then you will be expecting lower occupancy anyway.

Although I hear what you are saying and I'm always interested in cutting costs!!
However, it's a large 'solid rock' house (our friends own one 3 doors down the street) and it's difficult to get the signal to travel from one side of the house to t'other.

The local ADSL speed is about 7 Meg.
We will have one 4 bed apartment and two 2 bed apartments = I suppose we could have 16 folks if we were at maximum occupancy so don't really want to rely on ADSL.
Thus we would prefer to up-spec the speed to provide a better quality of service to our customers.

    :)
