16 for a motorcycle , the cashier was being stupid

No, the cashiers manager was being stupid and either made up a stupid rule or didn't explain things correctly to the cashier.

Why was your son filling up the instructor's car? Was it in lieu of payment for lessons? Or was it to gain experience with filling up?

Our driving instructor made all his pupils do it at least once.

I don't think my wife has done it since in her 20+ years of motoring :rotfl:

    It was to gain experience.

Never heard of this before my daughter put petrol in her car yesterday and the cashier told her that her mum would have to pay as you have to be over 18 to put petrol in.
My daughter replied that she had driven the car in and put the petrol in and the car belonged to her but they were adamant she had to prove her age.

The law is defo 16! cos you can ride a moped at that age and pass a car test at 17. I used to work in a petrol station and unless it's changed since 2010 then it's 16!
  • Not sure if the law is still the same now but you could drive a car at 16 if I out had higher rate mobility a few years back.

You can drive a car at any age (I first drove when I was 12). It just isn't legal on the road until you are 17.

So the petrol station checking ages is the same as supermarkets checking age for alcohol. You can drink at any age, you just are not supposed to.

There is a sign in my local tesco peteol station saying you have to be 16 to pump fuel.
Stupid thing is they activated the pump for her to dispense fuel , if they thought she was under age then why do that?

I suspect activating the pump was a reflex action while they were serving another customer and they didn't even look at who was at the pump.

The cashiers just respond to a light/alert sound on a control panel, they more often than not don't have a clear view of who is at the pump, if they do have a monitor the quality wouldn't be good enough to give a clear indication of the customers age group.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

In effect the cashier has tried to enforce a semi made up rule at the wrong time - awesome. The age limit relates to putting the fuel in the car, which as everyone knows now is 16 (all pumps should have that displayed). There's no age limit on paying for the fuel - you could send a 5 year old kid in to hand over a £20 note, although I'm not suggesting kids should be wandering around a petrol station. By default, if you are driving a car legally, you are old enough to fill it up with petrol. Can't see the point of having ID checks in the kiosk at all as by then it's too late.
