Credit Card for Children

Options
Hi
My 15 year old son is going on a school trip to South Africa soon. He will need money for food.
Are there any credit cards I can get for him?
If so are Pre paid the best or can I add him onto my credit card, as I have a halifax clarity card and pay no commission. I trust him, my worry is thieves etc.
What's peoples advice?
Many thanks
Gary

  • Get a prepaid card like FairFX and let him use one of them. Surely the school will provide food for a 15 year old?

    Wouldnt suggest a credit card.

A pre paid card is an option.

What food would he need to buy ? Food is surely provided no.

I've been told he'll need some money. The rest of the children are over 16 so it's different for them.
What are good pre paid cards especially for South Africa?
    Many thanks

FairFX 'Everywhere Card' involves many fees, including £6 for a supplementary 'Family and Friends' card that your son could use. It even costs 1.4% to spend your excess pounds in UK!

    https://www.fairfx.com/whatitcosts

Soldo provides supplementary cards for minors and good value for overseas use. Monthly fee begins after three months.

I would probably sign up for Monzo and give him my (nameless) card to take, no fees whatever, including overseas.

Halifax don't...they say (on their website) he needs to be 18+.

My how times have changed. When I was 15 it was a 3-day field trip to the Peak District...and always over a rainy weekend...in a tent!

Give him one of your cards to use, teach him a valuable life lesson, trust and financial responsibility. Don't listen to the snowflakes on here.

Why is it different for 16 year olds. He is still a minor he should be getting food. I wonder what the cost of the trip your paying for includes
    Mortgage free wannabe

    Actual mortgage stating amount £75,150

Overpayment paused to pay off cc

    Starting balance £66,565.45

    Current balance £58,108

    Cc around 8k.

As suggested get prepaid card like Revolut for yourself and give it him, then you can top him up from home whenever required and keep track on spending as Revolut seems to update almost instantly upon purchases.

That wasn't lucky. What was lucky was when it was damaged by the wind and collapsed so we had to move in with the girls! ;)

My how times have changed...because that wouldn't be allowed these days.
