Whatever options you investigate please make sure that you thoroughly check the T&Cs to confirm that you are allowed to do what you intend. In general under 18s are not allowed credit as their ability to form a contract is limited. It may be possible for him to use a secondary card on your account as it will be you responsible for his spend, and a prepaid card might work as there isn't really any credit involved, but check that there are no problems with PINs or using the card in a different country to the one where you will be located.

I would be cautious relying on credit cards in South Africa - there are considerable levels of ATM/card fraud there.

Under 18s can also have debit cards...

but how much money will he actually need? Could he take cash - leaving it with a teacher for safekeeping perhaps if it's a large amount (unlikely)

My thoughts exactly. Relying on a card for payments and cash can be a real pain. I'm assuming they won't always be in urban centres. Cash might be easier for everyone.
  • I'd recommend the Nationwide Flex One debit card which has no fees for transactions abroad including no ATM fees. Used it last year in the US and was accepted everywhere. Need to be under 18 to apply but can use until you're 23.

Check the username. If he lived in Sheffield, it was just a local bus ride.
