Why should they?? You bought the phone somewhere else so a) it's not theirresponsibility and b) they wouldn't know if it was locked. Only some iphones from certain sources lock to the first network used.

I suppose it's not their responsibility, still they could have warned me.
I'm more annoyed with Sony reaaly, the phone manufacturer. I bought a phone from them and it should be up to me to use it where I want. What business do they have in locking me to the first provider I use?

From the sounds of things you'd be better off without a mobile phone, they seem to cause you nothing but aggro. :D

The thought has crossed my mind. Trouble is everyone uses them so much now I'd be really cut off without one. When they do work they are great, to be fair.

btw here's some more aggro. My phone is misreading the battery level and decides that it is at zero when in fact it's 70% charged. So it's only a mobile phone for an hour or two. Then it has to be plugged in.

You say you bought a phone direct from Sony sim free and it's locked to o2?

What phone model is it, and exactly how did you buy it?

    It's a Sony Z1 Compact.

Sorry, I didn't buy it direct from Sony. I bought it from a company called Offerbank UK which I think was based in Dubai. Maybe that was a mistake, but I'm not aware of any way in which it should have differed from the same model of phone bought in the UK.

three and tesco both agree that the phone is locked to tesco/O2.

I've just got off the phone to Jessica at tescos and she tells me that ALL phones get locked to the first SIM that is put in them, wherever you buy them from, and that it takes 7-20 days for the unlock code to be issued. I repeatedly said that that didn't sound right but she was absolutely insistent. So I don't seem to have much choice but to keep waiting for this other code which tescos SHOULD have told me I needed when I asked for the PAC code.

Are tescos talking nonsense? They've offered me £50 tescos vouchers for compensation for the mess in cancelling my bundles order. If they are talking nonsense now I will go back to them and ask them for more.

As was pointed out earlier, it is only iPhones that sometimes lock to the first provider used. Tesco Mobile are clearly uninformed, but have done nothing wrong. Your complaint must be to the retailer-not the manufacturer or service provider.
You appear to have purchased a grey import from the Middle East, so of course you can't expect it to have the same spec as a UK/EU import. Nor will it probably have any UK warranty-if it needs repair under warranty, it would need to be sent back to the retailer at your expense.
So it wasn't really a money-saving move to purchase it from Dubai.
Sony supply the phones just as the market requires, and providers generally want those on contract to be locked, for obvious reasons. That's why SIM free ones cost more.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Now tesco have texted me to tell me that they have changed their mind and that the phone is already unlocked. I think it's time to try another complaint.

    .

Some of these money-saving ideas are not really that smart. Signing up to Bounts was a bad one too.
