Sorry to hear about this, OP. The balance of probabilities suggests that this was an opportunist crime rather than relatively sophisticated key jamming. I suspect your car didn't lock properly and one of the many people in a busy area was a crook on the lookout as part of a regular routine or just a nasty member of the public who spotted the opportunity as you went inside.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter how the thief gained access because it doesn't change the facts that things were stolen and they weren't secured in a way that's acceptable to your insurer. I'm afraid you're probably stuck with no option but to accept it.

Was it a Ford? If so this is what they use to get access. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-Ford-Tibbe-Decoder-Leather/dp/B00HJ6A3YQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490636839&sr=8-1&keywords=Ford+Tibbe+Key

There have been thousands of thefts from cars and van as a result. Amazon and ebay are still selling these things, even tough it has been flagged up in the media.

Sorry to say, police wont do anything. This is a low level crime and they wont put any resources to it.

When using a device such as that, wouldn't the alarm still go off (providing that there was one fitted) as it's normally the signal from the remote that disables the alarm.

I thought key jammers work when you are trying to lock your car? And if they are successful, then the car will not flash to show it is locked...

So even if it was a key jammer, the OP shold have checked the car was locked.

(I lived in Oxford for years so always try the car door handle before walking away...)

And if it was a key jammer, then lots of cars will have suffered the same fate, so the CCTV needs to be requested ASAP.

Ultimately, never leave valuable stuff in a car. A 5 minute wee break for a thief is LOADS of time!!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Sorry to hear about the theft OP, it's awful when it happens and it feels so personal. I can't add to the above but please listen to the advice about the CCTV, that's your only slim chance.

Personally motorway service stations are where I'm on my absolute highest state of alert, I've heard too many stories over the years. If there's more than one of us then I always make sure there is someone in the car, we never all go at once. It's not an inconvenience whatsoever as you've seen first hand.

I'm glad you posted this as it will make anyone who reads it much more aware in the future, so thanks for that. I hope you get some joy from the CCTV.

Even if a car key jammer was used then you failed to lock the car which would have been obvious by the indicator lights not flashing.

On my Mundano the indicators only flash on the 2nd press (deadlock).

I read about a scam used at motorway services and car parks where someone would walk past the car on the blind side and partially open a door, this relies on the fact that an awful lot of people lock the car as they are walking away and don't really check if the car is actually locked.

@ angrycrow, on some cars like Renault's the circuitry is separate, I recently had key card problems, the car would lock and unlock but it wouldn't detect the transponder, according to the auto locksmith that got me out of trouble, it's a common problem with keyless and keycard systems.

If by 'the police weren't interested' you mean they wouldn't investigate it at all, then you should insist that they do.

If you mean they investigated but couldn't find the offender, there's little you can do.

Even Watchdog gave this type of robbery some airtime a few series back.

When you remotely lock the car, the indicators flash to indicate that the immobiliser has activated, but the door still remains unlocked if a jammer is in use.

I would know if my car doors had not locked even 20 feet away as it has a loud clunk.

The device as we shall call it can be bought on e-bay for £25 and will prevent 95% of cars locking and also opening from up to 1 mile away.

Check the door is locked by trying a door handle or prepare to have your car riffled through.

It can not open a locked car, it can jam your keyfob from working.
