I think most of us who have been gardening for many years have learnt by experiment that life it too short to always do things by the book. I have rarely washed pots unless they are particularly grotty and never in hot water.

The one valuable lesson I HAVE learned in many years of vegetable growing is never to rush out and start sowing veg seeds outdoors in a fit of enthusiasm on the first sunny day of the year. The soil is almost invariably still too cold for good germination to take place. However impatient one is, you rarely lose by waiting a little longer as seedlings always catch up quickly when the weather warms up.

I use a small amount of Jeyes Fluid in a tub and do clean my pots - both clay and plastic - always cold water from the water butt. We washed our greenhouse with the same strength using an old dustpan-brush and a spray-gun (the kind with a pump on to semi-pressurise it) then hosed it down just Friday. We had a red spider (red spider mite, maybe) that left a sticky residue on tomatoes last year so we wanted to deter that from taking up residence again.

I think it is worth taking steps if you have had a problem previously
