Car in garage raises insurance cost

We're getting car insurance quotes for when we move house. We'll have a garage (yippee!) so won't need to park on the street. The house is on a street that's parallel to ours (a 3 minute walk away) but the insurance quotes, whether we put our current address or new address, are coming back higher WITH the garage than when we park on the street.
Can anyone explain that?!

It's a different postcode, the insurer probably rates it differently.
Sometimes a garage won't make a difference, try a quote but still parked on street, you may find it's a similar price.0 -
Thanks for replying. We've tried every which way. On the street with the new postcode, in a garage with the new postcode then getting a quote for having it in a garage on our street and then parked on our street. All come out with garage MORE expensive. It's ludicrous.0

Have you been using your real name, Date of birth etc for these quotes?
If the insurers systems see you doing multiple quotes at different addresses and parking in different places they may think your trying lie to get the cheapest price. Don't forget some also do identitiy checks so if they can't verify your address that may push the price up.
Hopefully your doing quote using dummy details.0 -
Car in garage has more risk of damage, entering or leaving bumps? Car gets damaged by item dropping on it? House / garage goes on fire? Burglars break in and access garage through side door, steal car?
Safer leaving it outside. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0 -
Same thing with a driveway; insurance is cheaper with car kept overnight 'on the street near where you live'. I guess statistically they get more claims for driveway/garage-kept cars, strange as that may seem when I see what goes on in the street!0

Most stolen car are from taking the keys during a break in, a nice BMW on the drive lets them know where to get the keys, the same BMW on the street isn't so easy.0 -

That's true for that sort of claim and incident but what about all the scrapes that nice BMW might get in the road from poor parking, bin lorries, and local yobs with sharp keys?0 -

how many BMW drivers claim them on their insurance and face the increased premium against just getting it done out of pocket? I bet its one of the most under reported events.
a single £30k stolen car burnt out is a lot of petty damage that is reported!0 -
I have heard that the number of people who take their wing mirrors off reversing into their garage the to outweigh the number of people who have their cars vandalized/bit but drunk drivers while parked on street. This is probably particularly likely to be true if you live in a vaguely nice area where you don't have armies of feral youths keying random cars for no reason.0

Similar to above points - a car thief has a more time and privacy in a carport/garage compared with on the pavement.0
