Money Moral Dilemma: Is it wrong for me to get a student card?

Are you a student? Yes. So can you have a student card? Yes.

Of course technically you are doing nothing wrong by using the NUS card. However I work (as a volunteer) for a charitable visitor attraction which offers significantly reduced annual membership for students. I find it exceedingly irritating when people who obviously are not short of money take advantage of this although I repeat you are well within your rights to do so - but it's a charity for goodness sake!!0

Well done you, for wanting to extend your skill-set in your own time. I just wish I had that kind of facility when I was studying for professional qualifications many years ago!
As you're entitled to a union card, you're also entitled to the benefits that go with it, irrespective of your ability to pay, so go ahead and take full advantage of the discounts and don't feel guilty about it. Remember that retailers have quite high mark-ups and that they'll still be making a profit on what they sell.
If you're still in doubt, give a moment's thought to the state pension and other benefits such as winter fuel allowance. These are awarded to everybody who reaches a certain age (65, I think) and it doesn't matter whether the pensioner lives on the breadline, or is a retired Chief Executive who doesn't really need the extra money. There's no means-testing.:)
The difference being of course that those people have paid into the system throughout their entire working lives!!0 -
If you really struggle with the discount, give the money saved to charity. The company you're buying from certainly won't give their extra profits to charity instead.0

I am in a similar boat - extra curricular learning paid for by an employee 'enrichment' scheme. I got the 3 year student card and have been using the discounts both at home and abroad as the International Student Card is valid for a year also!
No brainer!0 -
If you can get a discount by joining the NUS then why not? This is all about Money Saving.0

Of course you should use the card. Whether you are financially OK or not has no part in the question. I know it's not a good comparison but I am reasonably well off so it could be questioned if I should take my Old age Pension. Of course I should, I paid in all of my working life, so why not? The Student card, as I understand it, does not question how well off you are, so accept it and use it. Maybe you could follow the advice of one member who suggested that maybe you give a donation to Charity.0

I would not have any qualms - you are a student, you are entitled to join the NUS and it's not means tested.
Enjoy the perks!0 -
So are you a student because you hope to be smarter than the average bear or are you forever going to be asking stupid questions ?
MSE must be desperate to put this out as a moral dilemma !0 -
These discounts are negotiated for all NUS members not just for poor students. Both the NUS and its partners understand this.
