Ideally yes - I guess you can probably get by with the "drop a bit in ice cold water - if it's like caramel then it's done!" - personally though I like using a sugar thermometer
Hard lesson to learn was also that a wooden spoon is way better than a whisk, a le cruset pan works better than a "thin" saucepan (heat is more even) and if it catches a LITTLE bit then carry on! It's highly lightly it will redissolve and not make any lumps.
Most important is stirring and not stopping. You're dealing with milk fats and sugar - it catches really easily. Ensure someone else can answer the door if it goes and don't get distracted! :rotfl:DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I haven't had condensed milk for years as a child 'connie-onnie' sandwiches were a rare treat so it must be well over 60 years sine I tasted it . it was also used in tea sometimes instead of milk and sugar but as I don't have a sweet tooth I probably wouldn't make it Seem a good buy to make as a HM Christmas present though for toffee/fudge lovers0

Jackieo my fil never had a sweet tooth either which he put down to having been a child during ww2 (he was born in 1929). I think it's a great advantage to be a savoury rather than sweet addict, I wish I was!0

Tablet is a delicious sweet of Satan. A Glasgow based pal of mine made some when her Army lad popped home with a pal - she naturally fed them thoroughly & later waved them off with a packet of tablet each.
That night (about 11.30 pm) she got a call from the lad, asking her to explain how it was made, again? He & pals broke into the barracks kitchens & made & wolfed much before their sugar-high enthusiasm drew the MPs attention & the MPs then had to try to get 8 strapping fit healthy lads, all higher than toddlers on sugar, safely stowed away for the night.
They managed, & peeled 8 distinctly quieter lads off the flooring and escorted them back to the mess a few hours later, to clean up the floors, cookers & pans, so the cooking staff could feed everyone else.
His mother beams, recounting this appalling tale of sugar fuelled debauchery, not least contemplating both the idea of MPs trying to round them up & then supervising all the subsequent washing & mopping up.
I reckon they were very sensible to wait til they were back on base before trying it.0 -
I used to work with a lady who wanted to learn to make fudge, so she offered to make bags of homemade fudge for a friends wedding favours ... happy days she would turn up at work a couple of days a week with a different fudge flavour and we were willing taste testers. However once the wedding was over we never saw any more fudge, after making assorted fudge bags for 100 as favours, she had lost the urge to continue making it.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

I love fudge, the crumbly crunchy stuff but I couldn't justify making it.
Only for the reason that for me it's a treat, one of two pieces when you pay a fortune for a wee packet from a county fair
If I made it it would be goodbye to my teeth, and any hope of keeping a waistline lol0 -
The savings are definitely not worth it to me at all. We would have to eat so much fudge to make it worthwhile.
We don't eat sweets any more. After dropping all sugar and refined carbs, sweet tooths have gone and now even carrots taste too sweet.
But even when I ate lots of sweets, I couldn't justify making my own fudge enough to make any savings worthwhile without serious consequences to health and teeth.0 -
I make tablet with condensed milk,but only for special occasions,the last time I bought cdm it was from lidl and was only 89p so I bought a few cans.I can only get carnation locally and it's double the price.
You can easily halve the recipe if you worry about your teeth and/or waistline .The leftover half can of cdm can be decanted into a suitable tub and frozen for the next batch ,it won't get wasted then0 -
Mrs Tinks, would you share your chocolate fudge recipe?
I've only made vanilla fudge successfully and the time I attempted chocolate orange fudge the orange blossom water split and it was horrid and ended up in the bin!
I use a recipe with cream, butter, sugar and liquid glucose with the vanilla pasta added once it's reached the softball point and off the heat
