Declaring SORN & tax refunds

Sorry if this should be more in the tax forum than here but i thought it better suited here?

Basically i just want to check regarding refunds on road tax.
To get a refund from April (including) onwards when is the latest you can declare SORN? Is it 31st March 11:59pm?

When it was all paper am i mistaken or wasn't it like the middle of the month or something, but now with it all being electronic i'm even more unsure

So i'm just playing safe & asking here :)

You're mistaken. Tax has always been charged (and refunded) on a whole-month basis.

Yeah I know. I'm not saying they ever refunded partial months.

I'm asking when the cut off is.

For example if it's declared SORN late on the final day of the month, does it get processed say the following day & therefore in this case there would be no refund for April?

Basically how late in March can the car be declared SORN & still get a refund for April?

Yes 31st March but I wouldn't leave until last minute on that day just in case.

It's by day. So as long as you SORN it online on 31st, it's good.

It used to be by the day that you posted the tax disc off - so if you put it in the post box at 11.59pm on 31st, you were stuffed, because it wouldn't be collected and processed until 1st.

Online options are to SORN immediately or from starts of next month depending on where you are in the tax cycle. The refund amount is the same in both cases.

If it were me I would also take screen shots (or pics on your phone) of any web pages that say it has been completed at the end of the process - you never know.

Use the 11-digit number on your vehicle log book (V5C) to take the vehicle off the road immediately.

Use the 16-digit number on your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11) to take the vehicle off the road from the first day of next month. You can only use this number once.

    Hope this helps

Ah that'd be good then. Only thing is we only have the logbook, not a tax reminder so I guess I can't do it from the 1st in this case & can only do it immediately.

Yes SORN it on the last day of the month - I did on the 30th November and the cheque refund arrives about 4 days later. Now will re-tax it online on Saturday 1st April for the summer. Forms are easy and quick to use.

I once posted a tax disc from Morocco on New Year's Eve...

    January was refunded, no problem.
  • Bit of a problem here.

The car isn't actually mine. I was asking for someone who isn't registered here.

Anyway, they've sent their side of the V5C off, so they have no code to enter online in order to get a refund on the tax.

So with no code & only a few days left until a new month, how would they declare it SORN now?

What do you mean by their side of the V5C is it a new car they are buying or are they selling or neither.
For what reason did they send off the V5C.
