  • Hello and welcome:hello:

I may have misunderstood you but are you saying SC are encouraging/advising you to bank with Barclays? I've never heard of them supporting/pushing specific banks:eek:

I'm sure you can bank with whoever you want, although everyone will recommend that you choose one that you have no debts with. Barclays is obviously a no-no for you. I'm shocked that SC have suggested otherwise:eek:

I have a basic account with Nationwide. Easy as pie to set up online and I can't recommend it enough:j. There are several others that posters on here are very happy with.

    Good Luck:beer:

Yes that is what I'm telling you! i'd send a copy of the letter and pack if I could. I think I may have been phished but I went through the MSE links

Thanks for that:T. I didn't disbelieve you:o, just thought I must have misunderstood because it seemed such an unlikely thing for them to do IMO. Looks as if NewbieNat has had the same response. Must be a new policy of SC but I'd never heard of them ever doing this before.

I'd be very interested to hear sourcrates' views/advice on this when he's next on the thread.

SC have sent me 3 application packs for a Barclays basic account, none of which I requested. I spoke to SC who said Barclays will not use the right of offset if you have debts with them & open a basic account. I don't trust them either! I'm a bit suspicious of SC pushing this too.

I'm glad i'm not the only one getting suspicious. Did your letter open with 'As discussed...". I hadn't discussed anything with them. I completed the Debt Remedy stuff online, nothing else.

Seeing as I am already with Barclays I shall ask them to convert one of the accounts to a Cash Card Account. Ive already removed any tech packs and paid the overdraft so in an ideal world it should be fairly easy.

Its a poor state of affairs when your bank balance is £0.00 and you're happy about it cos it's an increase!!

Stepchange are creditor funded, as are Payplan, I believe, the only real impartial free debt advice service is National Debtline and CAB.

It appears most other's have an agenda of sorts, i would never bank where i had debts, i don`t care what someone in a call center tells me, i would use my common sense, and go with my gut instinct.

A bank saying they wont use the right of set off, the same banks that told you PPI was compulsory, once bitten, twice shy.

Yes, my letter did indeed start with 'As discussed'. I just wouldn't trust a bank that I have an overdraft & loan with not to offset,

I'm still wondering how to delay setting up my DMP to save for an emergency fund. Do I tell the creditors it will be set up at a later date? SC are pushing for it right away,

Stepchange don`t want you to save an EM, they want you to pay straight away, that is there Motis operandi.

Tell them you need more time and leave it at that, as for your creditors, tell them the same.

I have a credit card with no balance that I want to keep until the EM fund is in place. Once the DMP starts do I have to close this?

Both my wife and I have elderly parents living in other countries. Over the next years we will need to go to funerals and need to have the savings to do that. If anything happens before we can get the EM fund savings going we have no way of getting any credit to pay for flights.

Car rental requires a credit card so that is also a worry.

BC do not stop interest if you are paying 1% or more of the amount due each month.... so for example if you owe £12,000 to BC and your monthly payment is £120 or more they will continue to add interest. However, if your monthly payment is £119.... no interest. Go figure  The only way to deal with BC is to either not pay at all or drop to token £1 payments until the account is defaulted. They are terrible to deal with in my opinion.

Regarding UE - I just stopped all contact with mine, and the DCA kept writing and asking us to pay. I ignored them. They wrote with ever reducing settlement figures. They knew it was UE, but didn't ever admit it. The only time I responded was when they offered me to settle at 10% of the balance :T

Ok thank you. Am about to start my dmp this month self managed, well writing to creditors stating I’m taking advice this month and to put accounts on hold. Then going to take your advice and offer £1 token for 6 months (hoping can stretch to another 6 after that). Still waiting to hear on 4 CCA requests (sent these first as felt it would let me know where I stand with them all). So those 4 will get follow up chase letters and no payment. The UE one I think I may just leave too as they stated they had fullfilled their obligation but didn’t give an opinion whether they felt it was UE or not. If I write to them again stating I think it’s ue they may correct it...maybe plus I’ve seen some copies of replies they sent out online and it’s just the same repetitive paragraphs over and over, seems like a waste of a stamp to reply!
