Having been a member of this forum for years and used extensively in the last few, I can't comment on what it's like for first impressions as a new user.
What I will say though, is that it's a fantastic resource to ask knowledgeable people about things you don't know about. Obviously not to take everything as gospel and do your own research as well.
You do get the odd comment that either is a bit strange and/ or rude or at least comes across that way but this is the minority I would say.
If there is a case of someone revealing personal information and having it re-posted, it would have to at least partly the fault of that person as everyone *should* know not to reveal information that is *too* personal

Thank you, ChesterDog. Lemon Fool is just the sort of additional resource I am looking for.

I will also now need to research Dogs of the Dow and whether similar canines exist elsewhere such as Foxhounds of the FTSE !

I'm a bit lost by this thread. When you sign up you don't use your real name. My real name is not "Reaper", cool though that would be.

As long as you don't do that or give away any other info that identifies you then I see no reason not to describe your personal finances, and indeed it is impossible to discuss options unless you do.

That's not what happened

The OP posted his details.

Someone else replied with his text quoted, thereby making it impossible fior the OP to remove his details (I believe that was done without malice or realising the implications )

Others stepped in and asked both posters to remove details as they could allow malicious people to track down the OP (he had foolishly posted his Facebook details and said he was going on holiday fur 6 weeks ! )

Mods removed all posts with details.
Mods removed a couple of over argumentative posts

You jumped to wrong conclusions.

I think this is where this whole thread went awry.

Smed posted what they thought was a 'Hi...I'm on the forum... How do you all do' but, unfortunately the original post was written in such as way as to leave other posters thinking that Smed was after some discussion on investment options, not unreasonably.

It turns out that Smed isn't looking for financial advice, although may have been interested in discussing savings account options (still an unknown), and then the thread took on a life all of it's own, all because of how something was written or how that writing was understood....a bit like religion really.

I have a bit of sympathy with the OP. Bowlhead above outlines this bit of the forum quite well, but the different topics of the whole MSE Forums have very different feels and each has its own internal etiquette. Some are tea and sympathy, some are had facts, some can be downright cruel to the unwary. This one is pretty much middle of the road!

Smed have you had a read through monevator, that might be worthwhile for you, though it is very passively biased.

As others have said whilst some threads do turn into a general discussion then most posts are quiet specific and deal with an individual situation or particular point.

The thread referred to previously was unfortunate, that poster has a history of posting controversial posts and giving waht many would believe are outright misleading opinions. They can follow their wishes as they want but this is an open forum and where these can lead to the unwary and inexperienced being misled then they have to be corrected and challenged.
