Getting a statement of No Claims Bonus

I am trying to move my car insurance away from NFU Mutual in that I have an unresolved claim with them, and my premiums are currently very high. Another company advised me to get a letter/email stating my current No Claims Bonus on transfer. Seemed sensible. But NFU Mutual say they can't do it.
Their reaction was they cannot put anything in writing until I lapse my policy - because what if I have another accident? This was referred to a manager because I asked (obviously) for a timed and dated statement.
In the end I may lapse my policy regardless, but clearly this has to be ridiculous if not illegal. Can anyone explain what this might be about really? Dealing with them is likely finding yourself in Alice in Wonderland - and not in a good way!

They are right, your bonus is live on the current policy and subject to any claims during the insured period.
However, on your renewal notice it normally shows what NCB they've based the renewal on. That's normally acceptable.0 -
Have you still got last years renewal letter? It should be on there. You could use this as an indication of where you are at currently?0

When you get your renewal letter, that will tell you your current NCB - you can use that letter to show your new insurer.0

Do you have protected no claims on your current policy? If not then the number of years on your last renewal notice will no longer be valid as you will have part of the NCB removed for the outstanding claim (it should be reinstated if the claim turns out to be no fault, but at the moment the default position is that you are at fault).0

Thanks for your crucial suggestion .0

I agree with agrinnall but would also add that a lot of insurers won't accept NCB from your last renewal if it was a while ago as they would have no evidence of how many potential claims you've made since then.
NFU are correct though, they can't release NCB until the policy has ceased for the reasons mentioned above. All you can do is wait until the policy has lapsed. Shouldn't be an issue with the alternative insurer as they will know NFU can't do this and should give sufficient time after the policy has started for you to get the proof over to them.0 -
Thanks for everyone's advice. I've finally got a statement of NCB out of NFU. I didn't have protected no claims.
Probably inevitably considering my experience so far with them, the amount on the letter is somewhat different to the amount quoted to me over the phone. But I'm still better off moving waiting the result of the outstanding claim.Sue
