On the dole (well ESA) and paying £5 p/m for Office 365 suite, is this the best (or only) price?

No, but you may not qualify for better prices - I paid £60 for 4 years subscription to 365 University, but you need an education email address to get it. In your ciscumstances you would be better to ditch Office and use a free alternative, LibreOffice is probably the most recommended one.

Problem is i'm big into studying excel, LibreOffice would probably do for everything else, but i'm big into excel, i'm a chartered accountant by trade, so currently whilst on ESA doing a fair amount of study of excel.
The thing is I don't need Office 365, I could do with say an earlier version...

Would there be any problems running that. £28 one off?.0 -
is excel online a option? i haven't used it so don't know its limitations but just opened a workbook and it seems to have most of the functions"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Or Office 2010 $20, Office 2013 $30 @reddit
Or Office 2010 Starter (free); functionality limited so need to test it.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -

Can't test it (office 2010), won't let me install a 32bit program because i've got a 64bit office 365 installed, but I assume limited functionality, Word etc would be useful even with limited functionality.0 -
And note its only Word + Excel. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0

The rights and wrongs of reusing OEM licenses has been discussed often; reddit is offering the same as Ebay in this respect

I'm quite happy with just word and Excel, the rest I don't use, but if I manage to load it, excel has limited functionality, well its not much use.0
