Very disappointed with all the ridiculous speculation here. Just because someone is young doesn't mean they were texting whilst driving or trying to impress there mates.
Unless you've seen what happens you might as well keep your speculation to yourselves.

The only people who have seen it are the police and they have decided to prosecute, not even the OP has seen it and is speculating!

17 year old lad, first car is a well known boy racer model, drives well with his mum around, taking it out at lunchtime for a spin, has an accident, excuse is avoiding an animal, police have seen footage and decide to prosecute. Come on, whether it was texting, speeding or just showing off/bad driving, someone is telling porkies here and odds on it's the boy

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Just for information, this was in my local paper recently:

He added that Jones told officers she had swerved to avoid something in the road that “may or may not have been there”.
“We have lots of cases of imaginary dogs in this court,” he said.

(Woman leaves the road and rolls her car at local accident black spot, while 3x the blood alcohol limit.)
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

Was one on the one of those police shows with a "rabbit" - police said pretty much on camera they knew she was lying but as it was just her car damaged, didn't see the point in prosecuting. She had gone over the rumble strips on the right, over-corrected to avoid the barrier (or maybe she hit it) and spun it. You could tell from the police chat they didn't buy the rabbit claim for a second

    Disgusting attitude to young people.
Might as well assume everyone over 60 can't see or drive safely and should be taken off the road.

Looking to enact a police state are we?
  • That kind of attitude does not sit well with the police, lucky there are none in this thread ;)

Not at all, I was a young driver, I know full well I did stupid things.

What you're forgetting is that the Police are prosecuting for driving without due care and attention

OP's son went out driving at lunch time rather than stay in school, he did something stupid and got caught and now he's got a sob story to tell to naive old mum, "like I totally saw a nun pushing a pram of babies all holding kittens and she was all over the road whichever way I swerved and then she vanished into thin air". There's no reason for a school kid to go out driving at lunch time and he did something stupid and got caught and should own up and accept his punishment
