Asking for a partial refund. Reasonable?

I recently bought an item that was described as good condition. However, when I inspected it after arrival, some quite significant damage to the exterior was evident. This could well have happened during transit. Unfortunately, the pictures on the listing don't show the damaged area. I immediately contacted the seller with the bad news and he said that it was in perfect condition when it left him.

I'm now faced with the option of keeping the item as is or returning it. The latter does not appeal as the item is large and heavy and will need repackaging as the original packaging wasn't really adequate.

As a compromise, I asked the seller if he would consider a partial refund. That was over a week ago and I've heard nothing since.

Was asking for a partial refund unreasonable?

It's not unreasonable but many sellers don't really trust partials.

Just open a case on eBay for SNAD and ask for a return, assuming you win, and that is extremely likely, seller will need to provide a label for the return.

Partial is at the discretion of the seller.

I would ask, if this had been a purchase from John Lewis or a store in the real world, would you consider a return as not appealing?

If you want a refund, you need to return.

If I had bought the item from John Lewis, I would be seeking replacement rather than a refund. I want the item, however, in its damaged state I don't consider it worth the money I paid for it.

In addition, the original packaging was inadequate. If I return, I will need to source appropriate packaging to ensure that the item is not further damaged in transit back to the seller. That is going to cost me time and money. The item is not small, it is a kitchen appliance.

As I said above. A partial is at the discretion of the seller. You have no control over it. You therefore have three options. Ask for a partial and accept whatever decision is given. Ask for a refund and send the item back. Keep the item.
