so, i just my new house and now what to furnish it.
i have read and seem so many TV programs that said if you haggle you can get a discount - so i tried it..
Did not get a penny off...!!!!
I went to DFS go get a sofa - £700, i ask if i could get a discount if i paid all in one go, or even cash - the sale guys said "the word discount is like swearing to us".
i was like ok -
i though they would be happy to get their money right away instead of me taking out a monthly plan -
Went to get a bed, £500 at Dreams - and was told that there were was no discount - if i did not like the bed i could return it -
any tips for next?

I wouldn't bother trying to get a discount from any major retailer. I think if you are after a discount you need to be targeting local independent shops and antique shops perhaps.0

Near me there's a giant barn where they sell end-of-line/seconds furniture at vastly reduced prices. So I'd search around and see if you have something similar in your area. They often had very good prices but sure they'd be more willing to haggle.
You can buy furniture online (e.g. my parents were very pleased with sofasofa, though haven't used it myself: http://www.sofasofa.co.uk/). There's also charity shops/gumtree.
For a bed it's really the mattress that counts. There are now a few sites selling good quality mattresses, which will allow a return for a full refund with any reason within 100 days of purchase (I have a leesa: https://www.leesa.co.uk which I am very happy with). Bed frame can be acquired separately, again pretty cheaply if you shop around online.0 -
Beware of Dreams. Customer service is terrible once the cash is in their hands.
As for " if i did not like the bed i could return it -" read the small print. You'll have to pay for the transport and buy another bed from them- you won't get your cash back.. If the 2nd bed you choose is cheaper, you won't be refunded the difference. If more expesive, you'll have to pay the difference.0 -
Like above try furniture warehouses, you'll find outlet items from major brands usually as well. They'll definitely be happy to haggle.0

The two companies you mention are hardly the places to go for a good deal...0 -
I agree, try independent shops. It's always worth trying to haggle with big brands but it doesn't always work, partly because they're often in sale periods these days.
If you're shopping online though, it's always worth seeing if there's a voucher/discount code available. These sites can be good:

What I did was look on ebay for the style furniture I liked and found someone selling off a whole set. I managed to purchase most of the bits I wanted in one go, plus another item that was on the way home from this seller.
I paid:
£30 for a dining set that sells for over £2.5k to give you an idea of the difference. All I then had to do was hire a van for the day at a cost of £45 + fuel cost.
The added bonus is that this is real wood furniture not that chipboard rubbish. I could never of afforded all the stuff I bought at retail prices.
There are some real bargains out there.YNWA

Avoid Groupon for buying, if you search some of the furniture sold on Groupon on google you will hear the horror stories about quality of the sofas/beds and delayed deliveries/missing parts etc. The discounts probably won't be that good on there either.
HUKD is really good.0 -

We got £190 off a bed at dreams, free delivery and a mattress protector thrown in. After he said he'd throw in delivery and mattress protector I said "make it an even £1000 and it's a deal".
Also got £600 off a sofa in furniture village - went in 2 weeks before Christmas and asked what there sale price would be on boxing day, then told them if they'd sell it for me at that price now, I'd take it. They did.
So it is possible with big chains.0
