24 hour delay on 2 legged long haul

Hello
I am currently speaking to Etihad about a 24 hour delay I had on a flight from Manchester to Sydney.
They are refusing any compensation because the flight from Manchester to Abu Dhabi (the stop in the flight you can't fly direct to Sydney) arrived on time. It was the second flight from Abu Dhabi to Sydney that had the delay.
So they are saying that second flight is not protected and they won't offer any compensation for it because it wasn't from or to an EU airport. But I booked a flight from Manchester to Sydney, the Abu Dhabi stop was not my choice.
Is there anything I can do in this situation?
Thanks
Mike

Currently it's not very clear, but this type of delay is currently under investigation by the CAA.

As far as I am aware the CAA are taking enforcement action against a number of Airlines which are outside of the EU, Emirates being one of them. These airlines are claiming that when the 2nd leg of a journey is outside the EU like your onward flight from Abu Dhabi to Sydney they don't have to pay compensation. I am afraid this is probably going to take some time before it is resolved months if not years. You will have to wait for the outcome I'm afraid.0

The general consensus appears to be that there has to be some delay on the flight out of the EU, which then causes the connecting flight to be missed for there to be a valid claim. You appear to suggest the first flight was on time, if so I suspect there is no claim but since you have nothing to lose, at least not for 6 years from the date of the delay, it may be worth waiting to see the outcome of CAA action0

I recently flew with Emirates from the UK to the Philippines via Dubai.
The London - Dubai leg of the flight arrived in Dubai 2 hours 30 minutes late. I therefore missed my connecting flight from Dubai to the Philippines. Long story short I arrived in the Philippines 13 hours later than set out in my Emirates flight schedule because of the delay in leaving London. Can I argue the delay was 13 hours or will Emirates not uphold my compensation claim because the delay from London to Dubai was under 3 hours ?0 -
