Can I claim?

I recently experienced a flight delay on a Delta plane which meant that we missed our connection back to the UK with Virgin Airlines. We eventually arrived home over 4 hours later than expected.
The original flight was booked with Delta but the outward and homeward journeys were on a Virgin plane.
I contacted Delta and was told that all I was entitled to was airmiles or $125 in vouchers.
I contacted Virgin and was unable to talk to anyone and automatically directed to the Florida compensation form which unsurprisingly rejected my claim as the actual Virgin flight was only minutes late. I was unable to tell them that we missed that flight because of the previous delayed flight.
Can I claim for missing the Florida flight to the UK and arriving home 4 hours late?
If I can who do I claim from & how do I go about it?
Any advice would be appreciated

Claims are against the airline that delays you. For a non-EU carrier such as Delta, only flights departing from the EU are covered.
Your post sounds like your delay was on an internal flight in the US so is not covered by EU261. There is not an US equivalent so you could check Delta's conditions of carriage, airmiles is a fairly common compensation.
You could also check your travel insurance although many don't kick in for payment until 12 hours delay.
No claim from Virgin as you missed their flight rather than them delaying you0
