Perhaps I was too hasty shouting fraud, but the above post is a far better worded version of what I was getting at!0

Be honest with the insurer, it sounds like a genuine oversight however if you tell them the incident occurred after the change of item on the policy then this would be mis-representing the claim.
The insurer I work for would allow you to pay the difference in premiums and cover the claim for you, FYI.0 -

If you are intending to be honest then no need to wait at all.0 -
How did it smash, did you drop it ?
Its an expensive phone so get a suitable case for it or buy a cheaper alternative so if it happens again its not such a huge loss.0 -
As per the above posts, if you submit a claim with a false loss date it is likely the claim will be refused. If the Insurer has enough evidence, your policy may be voided on the grounds of fraud and you will struggle to get Insurance for the next few years.
If your Insurers collect the phone for review, which they are typically able to under the terms of many policies, it would not be difficult to find out when it last worked ect.
Rather than take a gamble, it might be worthwhile reviewing your home insurance and seeing if you have cover under that policy (accidental damage - and personal possession cover if the incident didn't occur at a home). Most insurance policies do not require specific make and model details prior to offering cover.0
