Smashed iphone 7

Hi :)

Just managed to drop my iphone 7 and been told it costs around £200 to be fixed!!!

I have insurance through my halifax bank account but as the phone is new I hadn't changed the model on the policy yet.

I've phoned to change it, but how long should I wait before claiming? The excess is £50 so would make sense to do that rather than shell out £200.

Any advice would be great x

Advice on committing insurance fraud? My advice - don't do it.
  • How is it insurance fraud?

If the post is genuine I can't see how this can be considered fraud.

In my opinion it's just an oversight. Easily done.
  • Hi,

mmm, an oversight, so you don't insure your house, have a fire, then phone up and tell them 'Oh I forgot to...'.
  • Yet a HGV crashes into the back of my car when my ten month old was in it & my insurance goes up by £400 despite it being settled as non fault, yet I'm the fraudster. Oh, the irony.

    Thanks for your help.

Bit of a difference between a house and a mobile phone. It's not right, it's very irresponsible and to a more appropriate extent, look very suspicious. All I'm saying is it seems a bit harsh to jump straight to "fraud".

Sounds like she had phone insurance, likely for another iPhone, got another one and didn't think to update the IMEI number with the bank. I've forgotten to do it myself before but luckily remembered before anything happened to it.

Just trying to give someone the benefit of the doubt..............
  • Hi,

think I remember a thread here some time ago, similar details, and the bank/insurer honoured the deal.
  • That is exactly what happened. The insurance was for my phone 6, I upgraded to the 7 last month and forgot to tell them! My fault yeah, but hardly fraud.

I wouldn't mind but I'm far from a scrounger, I pay everything on time, I'm not one of these who tries to get out of paying council tax or TV license or thinks the world owes them something. My tax bill in Jan was just over 6k and my corp tax due next month is just over 15k and all that will be paid.... I just thought maybe, for once, I could catch a break but clearly not.

Thank you. I might just phone them and see what they say. x

Intent here would depend on the date you intend to declare as the date the incident happened.

If you say it took place on the date it did and are willing to accept the result for good or ill, fine.

If you intend to say it took place on a later date, after the point in which you update the cover to improve your chances of a favourable result, then there is surely intent to deceive?
