new york hotels - maximum occupancy

don't know if anyone can help...but thought i'd give it a try!!

i'm going to New york in November, staying in Renaissance Times Square for 3 nights. Originally was going to be 3 people but now have a 4th wanting to come.

We have already booked our flight & hotel, and i'm being told by travel agents that will have to pay for another room (even though we are in room with 2 double beds) which is going to cost other persons over £1000 with flights!!! (ours comes to £600 each with flights!)

Question i wanted to ask is, would the hotel know that a 4th person is staying in the room?

thinking about just booking flight and staying anyway, but don't want us ALL to get chucked out!!!

any ideas??

the hotel room is booked on a per room basis.

personally, i'd just book another flight and go straight there... a room with 2 double beds in is up to 4 occupancy, and your travel agent is just trying to get more cash out of you!!!

    which hotel is it?

Why not email the hotel? They don't need to know that the email is from you (use a non named email address!).

Better to check before you go ... x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Never had any problem in the US with 4 in a room with 2 doubles. Just turn up and when at the check in desk just the person who booked go and register.

Just go for it. They are fairly relaxed about these things in the US.

I totally agree. they even let one person stay in a room with 2 beds (for up to 4 people) with no extra charge.. the beauty is the per room, rather than the per person charges that tour operators use

    hi, thanks for your reply.

Hotel we are staying in is Renaissance Times Square.

we already have flights sorted, thanks anyway.

Just don't know what to do, don't want to be chucked out on streets with nowhere to stay!!
  • Naa, you'll be fine, just turn up. Tell them at reception that 4 will be checking in. Don't try and sneak them in though cause you won't enjoy your holiday then being all furtive...
Sometimes you get what you deserve... :cool2:

  • I would not JUST TURN up !!
NYC in November is very busy.
I agree with previous poster that if the room has 2x double beds that four people should be allowed - however this is not the case in NYC.
The rooms are smaller and due to fire regulations they have strict occupancy laws ( you are even charged a state occupancy tax pp when you check-in).
I have copied this off the Marriott website ( they are the chain that owns Renaissance Times Sq.) :
    It cleary states :

    Beds and Bedding
    • Maximum Occupancy: 3
    • Beds: 1 King or 2 Double
It may well be best for you to ask your travel agent to change your reservation to another hotel that does accept 4 people in a room - they are out there as I have stayed in a few.
Let me know if you need some names.

Thanks for that info, it is what I was expecting to be honest!!

I have tried changing the booking with the travel agents already and because it is less than 8 weeks away that we travel they wont let me change none of it!!

don't look like theres any way round it then, and if they are so strict on max. occupancy then they'll more than likely keep an eye on people won't they?? no chance of even them sneaking in!!!
  • still disagree but if you want to be on the safe side fax or email your hotel.
BTW, ox, no need to shout.

  • It is big hotel so might not notice immediately - don't all be at the front desk when you check-in ! Still a risk of being caught at anytime.
Also noticed on the website that they are having renovations to the restaurant and guestrooms and lobby - on until November 15th .
If this is within your stay dates have you been informed ?
Try using this as an excuse that you want to change hotels - might work especially if you have not been informed of the inconvenience !
