This is a great thread as my DD is exactly the same. we had a deal that she kept her room tidy for two months she could have a hammy. Didnt think she could do it but she did :o

So I have asked on freegle, and looked on ebay for local. In Home bargains they have a couple of cages so we might end up getting the big one.

the bigger cage in Home Bargains is great, that's the one our hammy had until we found the rotastak, he spent hours up and down the ladders and climbing up the sides

I think we might get that one then, thanks. The rotastak seems too expensive at the moment (but then their dad is paying )

I'd definatley go for a rotastak cage if i was to keep hamsters again. Think i had every type of cage/enclosure going and the only one the hamster never chewed straight through/managed to get out of was a rotastak cage. I had a 4 tiered cage with a seperate wheel built in and it lasted 2 seperate hamsters lifetimes and then was in a good enough condition to sell on! Whereas all the cages/tanks i'd had before that ended up looking like disaster zones within a couple of months.

Well we have had a turnaround and we have been informed and I have researched that Guinea pigs would be better as they are more social, awake in the day and can be kept in a hutch outside during most of the year. This means we are now getting two as they need a friend.

Have been looking at hutches on ebay and rescue centres for small furries :)
    DD excited now.

I've been given a hamster by a person that lives on my street, they have lost interest. I think it's a girl, and she's very skinny, too skinny I think. :( I have had to put her in my big, empty fish tank for now and I gave her things to use for nesting. They gave me some pets at home hamster muesli but bag is almost finished and I wanted to know what do I buy her for bedding, as a cage, and for food. :o Thanks.

    Aww poor thing.
Get a wire cage, something that has 2 or 3 floors to it. Try ebay or you can get new ones for around £25.

Re bedding, wood shavings are the best, along with the shredded j cloth type stuff(for his sleeping area). Whatever you do,DON'T buy the cotton wool type stuff(its been known for hamsters to lose limbs because it gets wrapped around them. Still don't understand why pet shops sell it).
For something for the hamster to do,put a piece of kitchen roll in the cage for him to shred up himself.

Lucky she has you to look after her now... if you have white toilet roll (unscented) you can shred that up for her to use as bedding

I feed my hamster harry hamster food lol which I buy from any pet shop, I also give him a little slice of carrot or cucumber and make sure she has some fresh water in a small bowl a ceramic type bowl with a bit of weight would be best as she cant knock it over...

    lots of info here:

Might be worth asking on freecycle for a cage, they are the sort of things that get stuffed in the shed when the last hammy 'shuffles off'.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
