Since my telephone number has changed I have only received two calls and these were from my friends. However I am not allowing any company I have accounts with my new number. The only number they can have is the mobile.

You do realise the scammers just dial random numbers, so it doesn't matter whether you give it out or not.

The ultimate solution to nuisance calls is caller ID and a phone like the BT8600. That kills the problem stone dead.

I have the same, moved house 18 months ago, took phone+broadband package (as was cheaper than broadband only) had the phone plugged in for a week max and all I got was constant spam calls...never given number out - don't even know it and phone has been unplugged ever since (did register for TPS way back but no idea if they have stopped!)

I quite enjoy some of the scam calls, I'd miss them if they stopped completely. If I have nothing better to do I'm quite happy to play along.

Yes, I will switch my computer on, but it is in the other room, so just bear with me a minute. Oh no, I only have the one phone and it is fixed to the wall, so I'll just have to put the phone down and go to the study where the computer is. Just a minute.... No, I don't have a mobile you can call me on, only this landline. Ok, the computer is now on, what do I need to do next... I'll have to write that down, where did I put my pen...

    You get the picture :)

38 minutes is my record so far - I figure every minute they are talking to me is a minute they aren't calling someone else who may fall for the scam.

But what happened to you MABLE is not nice, at least it is likely that they had randomly dialed your number so don't even know who you are. Glad to hear Virgin were so helpful.

Like so may people with land line and mobiles I continually get lots of calls now from scammers. The usual culprit making out they are from Microsoft technical dept. Yesterday it happened to me 3 times and on the 3rd time I answered as Microsoft. The guy the other end said rubbish and I am going to kill you.

I phoned Virgin Media and explained the situation and first of all told me various things I could do. Then the very helpful lady said let me look at your account. The advisor then said as I had been with them for over 15 years she would change my telephone number for free and waived the £25.00 charge.

However the only calls I get on the landline is from scammers so will cause me no hardship. Also made sure it is now ex directory.

So my thanks to Virgin for all their help.

    UPDATE.

Well since I changed numbers the only person/people phoning was from the local hospital for the previous telephone subscriber. Also only one international call came up about 3 weeks ago but ignored.
