Hand Luggage Only for 5 day trip to Dublin??

Hi
Three of us are travelling to Dublin with Ryanair for 5 days and we had planned to take hand-luggage only. (Got 1p flights but haven't booked any checked in luggage as yet). Having seen how much we could fit into a small suitcase-type hand luggage on a recent flight, we thought we could manage it with careful planning.
But whilst I reckon we could just about get away with it with clothes, shoes etc, it's the limitation of liquids I'm struggling with. When I've added up things like contact lens solutions, hair products, perfume, deoderants, toothpaste etc I can't see how it's do-able. It looks like paying to put at least 1 bag in the hold is the simplest solution.
Has anyone else managed anything similar?
Thanks for your help

why not buy cheap toiletries when you get there ? then any leftovers just throw away ?0

I thought that when we went to dublin, but for me your better paying the £10 each way and putting a case on. As toilitries are not that cheap in dublin, especailly in boots. And when your on holiday do you really want to be travelling around shopping.
Also we booked our cases in so that we could put a bottle of vodka and tia maria in for the room. As these are so expensive in dublin,.0 -
I thought you were still OK to have these things in a clear plastic bag to present at security?
I've done quite a few trips hand-luggage-only and been able to take my toiletries / makeup etc. Can't remember the exact policy now, though!
I'm only concerned for you because Ryanair will charge more for hold luggage if you request it after purchasing the flights - don't want to waste your money if you can get away with it :-)Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Yes, you can take them in hand luggage as long as they are in containers less than 100ml and they fit in a clear plastic bag (zip-loc style) - check the BAA website for details. I do lots of business travel and take hand luggage with overnight toiletries. I decant my shampoos etc into small travel bottles (you can buy these from Boots and Superdrug) and you should be fine for 5 days.0

The other decision to be made is how important it is to you not to be queuing for ages at check in. Online check in means you go straight to the Departures lounge via Security (whose queues are bad enough frankly), and at the other end you don't have to hang around waiting for luggage to appear on the carousel
Last week we took rucksacks to Valencia for a three night stay. The only thing I had to buy was toothpaste and deodarant and we did that at the Boots in the Departure Lounge after we had gone through security.
Also, from coming down the steps of the plane to getting into a taxi was roughly 2 minutes !
Online check in. Best thing since sliced bread0 -

Here is the link to the BAA Website giving details of liquids permitted on aircraft hand baggage.
Since this was introduced I've taken to collecting the small bottles that many hotels provide free shower gel and shampoo in. You can wash them out and use them for most of the toiletries you need for up to a week. Get a small deodorant stick and small tube of toothpaste and you should be able to cover everythiing. And you can get them al in the 8" square clear re-sealable plastic bag that is stipulated.
Also worth remebering that most airports have a Boots after the security control where you can, for not too much more than the high street, buy as much as you want to stuff in your hand baggage, but remember you will not be able to bring it back as hand luggage as the same rules apply. Also do not forget that if you buy in the “Duty Free” shops on the way out you will not be able to bring back any liquids in containers larger than 100ml and they must all still fit in the 8" square plastic bag. However, most perfumes, aftershaves and Eau deToilette, etc can be bought in 100ml bottles, but not as cost effective as the larger sizes.0 -
Hi All.
Many thanks for the replies and advice.
Luckily I've got a healthy supply of hotel mini shampoos etc (they seem to fall into my bag whenever we're checking out!), so think I'll just buy some small containers and decant the contact lens stuff into those.
Definitely prefer the idea of heading straight off rather than hanging around for luggage.
Thanks again0 -
Do check the size of hand luggage allowed. I've seen bigger handbags than some aircraft allowances - especially on small planes.

Also check if there is a weight restriction on hand luggage. Some have this and some don't.0

If you are really stuck phone the hotel and ask if they will hold mail for you, then you can post yourself a parcel over so that it arrives a couple of days before you do. The postage is usually cheaper than the baggage fee, and your contact lens solution will still be sterile. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
