I've had this situation today - a 4 figure value item, and someone has put in a Best Offer 50 quid higher than the Buy It Now.

The only reason i can think is that I have 'immediate payment' required, so maybe they are offering more than the BIN to take it off the market (if I accepted the offer) then could take time over paying, or not pay at all. Seems very fishy as if they need it urgently, the BIN is available and quicker than messy about with funny looking over-value offers!

I rejected the offer, and told them it was 50 more than the BIN and suggested they use that - but radio silence since then.

Is there a strange new game that we sellers are not aware of?

With mine I emailed the buyer and I still have no reply, so I counter offered and still nothing. Item finished earlier this evening so I have just relisted it and will see what happens now.

Or could they send you a fake PayPal email confirming payment of the higher amount, then email you saying that they've realised their mistake and ask for a refund of the difference. But then you would see they haven't paid you when you log into PayPal....
I'm normally the cynical one, but I can't think of a workable scam here.

Not sure how that would work. It would show as unpaid on eBay and also there would be no PayPal payment to part refund against.

I am struggling to see any workable scam here at all.

Either the 'buyer' is one short of a full deck - or it's some sort of scam.
Either way I'd simply block them and move on.

Never let what looks like an easy full-price sale cloud your judgement! (I remind myself of this often).

I've just had an incomprehensible email via ebay messages from 'buyer' , I can't work out if it is someone not used to using English, or just someone who cannot throw a sentence together. It isn't poorly written, I would never criticise anyone for poor spelling as my own is appalling, it is complete nonsense, but the gist appears to be to send invoice (invititicion snece) and they'll pay - but it isn't clear. So blocked and I'll move on.

User name is a very English sounding name with a number, and I admit to thinking it was someone slightly older using a birth year, but I'm no longer sure. User name is like 'Johnrobsmith41'

Likewise, I have an item listed for Buy-It-Now or best offer.

I've received an offer of 1p ABOVE my Buy-It-Now price. The ebayer has low number of feedback and only as a buyer.

What's going on and how best to proceed?

I assume you have 'immediate payment enabled' on your BIN.
This offer is to get around that - they offer more, hoping you'll accept, but they won't pay. 'immediate payment' isn't active on best offers you see.

    Block them.

    So, I have asked her.

And, just a thought, she may have a voucher with a minimum spend threshold.

I still get offers over BIN, for example item price is 800, I get an offer of 1k.

I am pretty sure it's European buyers who have not cottoned on the prices are in GBP, not euros as these sort of offers have always seemed to be from Europe.

But in your case, I think it's to avoid your 'immediate payment required' on your BIN. Voucher is plausible I suppose.

I wonder whether some of these Buyers (especially those with low feedback scores) simply don't understand how eBay works.

Perhaps they think that "Make an Offer" on a BIN listing means that they need to make an acceptable offer above the BIN price in order to "buy it now" (i.e. not run its course like a normal listing).

By definition, everybody on here has a reasonable understanding of how eBay works, so it's easy to forget that there are many people out there who don't really have a clue.
