I think what I think was meant by benefit is that housing association tenants are better treated than by some private landlords. The quality of the homes are good as well.

Since I am living in my flat I did not notice any benefits only difficulties but I will not say any more. I do not know what kind of benefits you are talking about ?

Housing associations are social landlords. They offer housing to people who find it difficult to get housing any other way. They offer the benefit of much more security than private landlords. If you live in a housing association property and you keep to the rules of the tenancy you will not be made to leave. If you rent from a private landlord you can be asked to leave the property after 6 months.
Housing associations are not all there to offer people the right to acquire their property at a reduced rate. If you want to buy a housing association property you have to find one that is building property for sale. They offer shared ownership property. The property that you are living in is not for sale it is one that is only available to be rented.
You are living in a housing association property that is available for people who can't get secure living accommodation except by renting from a social landlord. Your property is not available for sale. If you want to buy a property you need to find a housing association shared ownership scheme where you buy part of a property and rent the rest from the housing association.
No one can tell you how to buy a housing association property that is not for sale. The housing association is not obliged to sell you the property. Your housing association wants to keep your property for people who need somewhere to rent. The UK is short of social housing the more that is not sold off the better as there are a lot of people who need it. If you do not need it there is no reason why you should not find somewhere to buy but not the flat you are living in. You could also rent privately but you will not get the same security from doing that.
If you want to buy a property and can't afford to buy on the open market you need to find a shared ownership scheme. Your housing association is not selling its property it is not helping people to buy property it is helping people to have somewhere secure to live. The benefit of living in a housing association property is that you will not be asked to leave as long as you obey the rules. You could be asked to leave a privately rented property even if you obey the rules as the tenancies are often shorter.
You do not get the benefit of buying your housing association property at a discount because it is only available for renting. There are other housing associations that offer schemes for people who want to buy.
When you go to the council and say you are homeless the council will arrange social housing for you. This social housing could be owned by a housing association because housing associations also house people from the council's waiting list.
If you cannot afford the rent you must apply for some benefits to help you to pay it. The council tenants who might get the discount on the rent are the ones who were living in the properties when it was transferred to a housing association. This could have been several years ago and since you do not say that you remember this transfer it was probably before you got your property to rent. (More than 5 years ago.)
Why do you think that you will have to leave after 5 years? What has changed?0
