I would recommend making that call, as other posters have suggested. Insurance companies look for any way to wriggle out of paying up on a policy and if you haven't told them the house is let out then this is a perfect excuse for them.
In my experience the landlord insurance is more expensive, but not outrageously.0 -
They may not even do landlord insurance.
When I did up our adjoining cottage for my mother to live in I asked my insurer what kind of insurance I needed - could it count as normal household? They said it needed landlord insurance, which they unfortunately did not do, so I took out a policy with another company.

I am insure with lloyds currently and they do Landlords insurance. I am just going through an online quote to see what it wlll cost0

Would anyone know how to get the External floor area from the Internal floor area. I am filling out the BCIS calculator to try and work out how much my hosue would cost to re build! I have the internal area as it was on the original advert for the house. It's hard to know how much to add to get the external area.
In the Internal measurements, do they include hallways etc. or just the rooms?

If the property is furnished or part furnished of course the landlord can take out contents insurance, it just doesn't cover the tenants possessions

Go outside and measure the length and width of the ground floor walls, then multiply these two figures together.
If the upstairs is identical to the downstairs, simply double the ground floor area.

Unfortunately I live a few hours away from the house, as it is rented.
The internal area is 103m2. I dont know if that helps much. I.m not sure how accurate the insurers need it to be.0 -
Landlord insurance can also protect you against claims from your tenant, eg if a kitchen cupboard falls off the wall and lands on the tenant's head, or the property is fire or flood or leak damaged and uninhabitable and you need temporary accommodation for the tenant whilst it's fixed.
