Struggling to find property to rent

Hi All,

Not sure how much advice anyone can give me but I need to let of some steam. I've just secured my dream job in another county and I am going to be moving in around 6 weeks.

I am finding it impossible to find any properties to rent! I have rang a few agencies who will only do visits between 10am - 4pm weekdays which seems ridiculous in my mind as surely most people work between those times? and anything I do get booked in is snapped up before I can see it. It's an hour and a half's drive and I only have one day of leave before finishing at my current job.

I have tried rightmove, zoopla, gumtree, facebook groups. agencies direct websites. Any other suggestions as to where I can look?

Thanks

When I moved overseas, I used a buyers' agent. She spoke to me about my requirements and then arranged a viewing day. We saw about 10-15 properties and rented one.

I would recommend using that kind of service when moving overseas.

There was a fee which was paid either by my employer or by the landlord (I can't remember which).

Can you not get a few days off in the new country before starting your new job? Perhaps spend your first week in a serviced apartment?

When I've moved to a different part of the country I've booked myself into a hotel or B&B for a couple of weeks whilst I suss out the area and arrange some viewings. You're right that it's a PITA when letting agents only hold viewings between 10am and 4pm, especially when the adverts specify no students and no DSS. :)

It's best to live locally and then look around. I'd book as a Mon-Fri lodger in a house short-term, or AirBNB, or find a small/cheap B&B. You can get in quickly - and still be able to move quickly when you do find somewhere "proper".

I've done that 2-3x in recent years. No commitment, no fees, easy in/out and no bills/responsibilities.

I've had similar problems. Fortunately last time stayed with girlfriends family until a house became available, it took six weeks to get somewhere in easy cycle commuting range, furnished, and with adequate parking. Apparently six sets of prospective tenants applied for it.

I did once use a hotel for a few nights that worked out cheaper than renting a place per day. A few weeks surfing cheap hotels may be in order to get time to view.

All that said, you are only a three hour round trip away. Its not the end of the world commuting for a few weeks.

Another idea - stay in a B&B the first week, so you can scrub up well and look perky in your new job .... after that camp for a month or so to save a few quid. It'll be getting warmer by then ... and keep you motivated :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I am considering putting my furniture in storage for the time being and renting a house share for the first month or so until something perfect comes along. I think I was just so shocked at how unhelpful the agencies are. Do they not want to sell properties haha!

Where is the new job?? maybe have a drive round the area yourself and find places that are up for let??

Or you could try moving half way??
