Agree with the above, the only way a pw can take off the clear coat or damage the paint is if the underlying paint/clearcoat is itself already damaged/failing. Unless, of course you've got something like that monster that was on Top Gear, even then it looked a little contrived to me

It was the washer
It wasnt. A correctly used pressure washer will NOT remove paint off a car with healthy bodywork. End of.
Otherwise that pressure washer could have removed the top layer of paint from EVERY car.
OR
You dont know how to use a pressure washer and it was set at too high a pressure.
OR
You had it deliberately set at too high a pressure.0 -

That's the whole point of this threadChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
By your own admission your car was banger so it's not really a leap to suggest the paintowrk wasn't in a great condition either. A new(ish) car, which is what this thread refers to shouldn't be damaged by a pw unless there was underlying damage to the paintwork already. However until (or if) the OP puts up some pictures it's pure speculation as to what caused the damage.Of course it wasn't correctly used, that's why it took off the lacquer. duh

My personal guess is that they've applied some wash solution or maybe a strong (or neat) APC and let it dry onto the bodywork.0 -
