    You have no case to complain about. From the Ts&Cs you agreed to when you became their customer:
    What happens if you don’t meet your responsibilities
    If you:
    • do not promptly respond to our requests for Customer Information;

    ...

    then we may
    (i) be unable to provide all or part of the Services to you and can end our entire relationship with you;
    (ii) take necessary steps for any member of the HSBC Group to meet the Compliance Obligations; and/or
    (iii)block or close your account(s).

    Have just re-read the Ts&Cs, and found something that makes me want to retract my reply above:
    1.2 We will cancel an additional card when you tell us to. We do not have an agreement with any additional cardholder so we cannot give them any information about the account and you are responsible for use of the account by an additional cardholder, including any use that makes you break this agreement. For example if an additional cardholder makes a payment that takes the amount on the account over the credit limit you will be liable.

    If the bank states it has no agreement with the additional cardholder then it stands to reason the additional cardholder has no agreement with the bank, as an agreement has to be between two parties.

    If a bank doesn't want to transact with you, or only under onerous conditions, then it's probably best to move on.

    There's plenty of alternatives and choice, so only an issue if this happens multiple times and unlike a bank account a credit card isn't a primary right by most estimations.

    Had this letter about 6 months ago re Mrs. s. who is an additional cardholder on my a/c.

    Interestingly, we have previously been through the same scenario twice before:

    First time in August 2015 for John Lewis Fin Servs (also run by HSBC) which wasn't too bad to comply with as they allowed ID to be checked at local HSBC branch.

    Then a second time in May 2016 for first direct (our bank of 27 years and also part of HSBC) which again wasn't too bad to comply with as they did it all by a video call.

    Interestingly it seems that although you agree to give them the right to share data with other HSBC group members, they don't seem to be cross-referencing with each to eliminate the need to keep repeating this exercise once they've already done it for one of their brands, which is a poor show.

    So won't be bothering to comply this time and am now planning to drop the card sometime this year regardless of whether or not they take any action re non-compliance.

    They don't really need to give you a reason why they're asking. It's their card, not yours, it's their money you're spending, not yours. They probably have ID and address verification for you, and just need it for your husband. Where i work a restriction would be placed on the account (which would include both cards) until the documents are received. Up to you really, if you want to make a complaint then fine.

    Well, arguably it's not their money either. It's my money. I have a current account with FD, and HSBC therefore has unfettered access to MY money, which they lend to other people.

    I have warned him. But if it should be blocked they will just have a major complaint on their hands!

    Which will get you no where except a cancelled extra or possibly both cards.

    Blame the government for considering your husband to be a terrorist and/or criminal and you a supporter and money laundering funder of the same until you provide enough information to let them monitor your and his financial transactions.

    Banks have been fined millions by the FSA for not being able to provide sufficient information to the government about their customers.

    By all means complain, but, to the people responsible - your MP.
  • Well, I thought a bit about sending the requested information, but eventually did. Got. Letter back from M&S today saying "thank you so much for taking the time to send your additional cardholder's documentation". So just closing the loop.
