Thank you everyone, we had a lovely time. The restaurant was mostly empty, probably because of where it's situated, but the food was really nice as well as very reasonably priced. We split the bill and treated the birthday boy.
I rather went to town on the birthday cake as I had an inspiration and found the perfect recipe on the internet. He loves owls so it was an owl cake. I'm a better baker than cake decorator but surprised myself with a very effective creation with a phenomenal calorie count. The ingredients were quite costly but I'm counting them under the entertainment budget - still a lot cheaper than the original plan, too!
Today has been very snug: we went to church this morning, a family Sunday lunch afterwards and J&L came for the rest of the day so we played a board game in front of the log burner for ages. I'm off to work early tomorrow so I had better go and get ready now.
24/11/18 Spending:
Housekeeping £3.75
Entertainment £12.70
This weekend's MS:
Forgot to buy bread so ate up various carbs for tea! Oatcakes and croissants are nice at teatime.
No need for central heating when the log burner is running.
Cappuccinos at £1 instead of £2.50
Chocolate at £1 instead of £2.50 (win, win)
Decluttering:
A little.
P.S. leftovers from cake ingredients worth about £4.10 so it cost about £8.60 and we have some chocolate, margarine, sugar, biscuits, egg etc for future use.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I am making gingerbread syrup (simmer a cup of sugar with a cup and a half of water, 2 tsp ground ginger, half teaspoon each of cinnamon and vanilla - for 20 minutes. Use in hot water or coffee). Gingerbread syrup is a very winter thing! MS too.
.
This deserves a reminder, my DS1 still makes it regularly and it will be part of his final show piece for his gcse coursework. Thanks againMy mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

I think that sounds lovely too. I haven't played a board game for ages. How many people do you need for the average game? Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

Ooh, I'd forgotten I'd posted that! I'm so pleased it's come in useful. Lots of good wishes to my fellow ginger enthusiast (AKA your DS) for his GCSE.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

You can probably play most things with two or three people, at a guess, but some games seem to allow for 6 or 8. DH doesn't like board games whereas I'm quite competitive so it's been fun discovering the cornucopia of games L and J have!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
