I'm sorry I can't help but I'm glad you've asked this question because I've got exactly the same car/problem.

For a 2006 car I'd probably just go to the nearest Timpsons and get them to clone the existing key - not as secure as getting a proper one coded to the car but probably not worth paying main dealer prices.

There will more than likely be a transponder in the key fob for the immobiliser so whilst they could cut a key that'll gain access to the car, it ain't going to start it, best to go to an auto locksmith they will be able to supply and program a new key cheaper than main dealer, there may be aftermarket key fobs available making it even cheaper.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

If the key is cloned, it will start the car. That's the point of cloning the key.

It's not as good as having two keys with unique coding, but it's a way to get two keys.

Modern cars have immobilisers, how do you get around that with just a key blade

The poster did not say anything about having a key cut. They said 'clone'. They didn't mention key blades.

Cloning the key means to copy the immobiliser chip's data to a new chip, inserted into a new copy of a physical key.

Timpsons will clone the immobiliser chip.

Other key-cutters can do the same. As you say - if they couldn't, they might as well not bother being in business, because their car keys would be useless.

The proper way of doing it is to get the lost key(s) deactivated from the ECU, and new keys activated. That means that if you lose a key in the future, you can have that lost key deactivated.

The cheap and easy way of doing it is to clone the key you do have. The drawback is that if you lose one key, you cannot deactivate it, because that would also deactivate the clone(s).

OP (and bertiewhite), Do you mean you only have a single key, or you only have one remote key but also have the other non-remote one?

With Fords of that era, if you have two different keys that are coded to the car then you should be able to add extras yourself. Note that a cloned key (from Timpsons etc) won't work for this - it must be two keys with different transponder codes.

In fact, you can code the remote opening using a single key but need two for the transponder.

Same here. The car ownership was passed to me by my ex-wife when we were still married and when we split up, the spare key was the last thing on my mind :o
