Would my cats be ok to be left alone

Hiya i have 2 cat they are 15months old im going away next weekend and have asked a neighbour to feed them she can only feed them at 3pm when she gets in from work as she "dont do mornings" shes not a big cat lover either, my usual routine for them is let them out first thing in morning then they come in mid afternoon for a nap then they go back outside again 7ish till 10.30 then they are in all nite.
I have told my neighbour to let them out at 3 as they will be bored and wont bother with food then let them back in 10pm then feed them only problem is that they will only get be getting wet stuff once a day but will be leave plenty of biscuits, im just worried that they will be in the house from nite till 3pm.
will they be okay, i dont really fancy the idea of a cattery plus its the expense as i didnt know i was going away till last nite.

thanks in advance for replies..just hope it all made sense lol

  • Would you be able to leave a cat tray out for them, near the door in case they need to go as you are leaving them rather a long time and changing their routine. Can your friend not let them out before she goes to work and then feed them at 3pm.
  • they got a covered litter tray which they still use sometimes, i did ask her if she pop in morning and just let them out but she just said no as she always late for work, thats the thing im most worried about leaving them alone along time

dont mean to sound rude but do you have another neighbour to ask. this one doesn't really sound like she's doing you a favour and you'll probably worry the whole weekend. Do you have a friend who wouldn't mind helping out?

it's hardly putting her out just to pop in before going to work  however if this is the only option then you have no choice but to go along with what she can do to help. I'm sure you're kitties will be ok for the weekend, just make sure the litter tray is there and plenty to drink. Cats are quite resilient :D

From nite time to 3pm then yes they will want to go to the loo but they'll use the tray. As for your neighbour always late for work, has she tried getting up a bit earlier??
  • i wouldnt be able to trust anyone else round here with key, all my friends live 50miles away so im sort of stuck, i thought the same about her when she said no, what she dont realise is if she dont let them out she will have poo to clean up in litter tray.
we are going away friday lunch time i will leave cats outside friday then and coming back sunday afternoon so they will only really be left for ages on saturday as my neighbour dont work on sunday so i just said when she gets up let them out then i will be home later on.
I think a cattery would put my mind at rest but dont know how much that would cost and they would prolly not be open on sunday to collect them so i would have to pay from friday till monday lknowing my luck.
    thanks for advice tho
  • I'm sorry, I wouldn't trust this neighbour as it sounds like too much hard work for her - what if the cats don't come in bang on 10.30 - can you rely on her to wait for them/call them, or even look for them?

OTOH I don't think a cattery is a great idea either as it's a huge upheaval for just two days.

If I were in your shoes, I'd call a local cattery, and explain the situation and ask if they provide a service for letting cats in/out - I know it's a popular thing for dog owners  for lunchtime walks etc so they might be able to help you - or know someone who can. My local vets has a few posters up from cat-sitters who'd probably take on that sort of thing. So you could try calling a veterinary clinic too.
  • thanks will make some phone calls this afternoon, i thought i was being silly asking daft questions but my cats are like my babies.
  • Can you get a timed cat feeder?

They're not cheap - maybe you can get one second-hand? - but I've got one that lasts 5 meals (2.5 days), and will therefore see them through a weekend food-wise. I leave a litter tray for my tomcat and, although he doesn't get to go outside for two days, his basic needs are met and it's only 2 days after all...

  • just rang a couple of cat sitters that come and feed its £15 everytime to come to house and they dont late night either.....oooo didnt think about those feeders will look in argos as i got some nectar points many thanks
  • Hi, i've gone away for the weekend before and have just left my two cats plenty of dry food two big bowls of water and several litter trays and they were fine, i don't think it would hurt them not going outside for a couple of days. I agree with the others about not asking your friend as i would worry about the cats not coming in on time.
  • have decided that im going to buy one of them large timed feeders and leave loads of dry food down and leave them in the house with plenty of toys i will hide their cheesy biscuits in among their toys will give them something to do will also leave a radio on for them then i wont have to worry much.
thanks for all advice much appreciated.
