It's because it wants to use 8GB to hold your old Windows installation, so you can go back to it (within a limited time period).

I think in theory you should be able to download the Windows ISO installer, ideally to the device itself, then run Setup.exe from the installer. It should complain about the lack of space and ask for a drive to be connected with some free space

I'd be interested to know if using WinDirStat or similar as suggested earlier reveals any folders taking up lots of space?
Found MSOFFICE7.5g and used win compression to get to23 gbfree.

Asus 32 gb was 28 gb when office was installed.

As I have ms account think what I will do is remove office and re install from usb

That will be over 8 go free.

Thanks for the ISO tip though I don't want to use software which isn't purchased.

Cant mind how to use a win usb installer I'll continue as planned.

Exactly running the update direct from usb only looks at Asus drive no option to change to D usb drive.

Do you still have the installer as an ISO file? I think if you had the ISO file on the computer itself, then you should be able to mount it from there anduse the USB port to hold a *blank* drive, which might give Windows enough space to work.

Also, what was the size of the folder "C:\Windows\WinSxS\"?

If it's significant you might be able to save space by opening a Command Prompt in Administrator mode (use the WindowsKey - X shortcut or right-click on the Start icon bottom left) and then running the command
    dism /online /cleanup-image /startComponentCleanup

I actually have a 32GB device with the same problem so I may give it a go myself later.

    Excellent advice though too late.

Ive gone old school delete profs including office Dropbox etc.

Got my we 32gb to approx 21gb win update running 31% complete.

Spend some time today re installing profs to usb drive which has been28gb free since purchase for 1 Sony 4K tv update - last year.

This is fun returning to Windows after a few years though the delete and re install still exists in some form.

    ... and I did.

I know that the OP has got past this anyway but thought I'd post my experience in case this helps someone.

What I found was that in terms of saving disk space, the ISO installer, which I and other had suggested, wasn't much help! At least not for what I wanted to do, which was to upgrade from one version to the next without a clean-install.

When I boot from a USB made from the ISO, and select the option to Upgrade, it tells me I can't do that, and I need to run the installer from within Windows.
[Which does make me wonder why the Upgrade option is there in the first place? Has Microsoft finally been taken over by Sirius Cybernetics?:
Arthur: What happens if I press this button?
    Ford: I wouldn't...
    Arthur: Oh.
    Ford: What happened?
Arthur: A sign lit up saying 'Please do not press this button again'.
    ... but I digress ;) ]

When I run the Installer from within Windows, it then seems to copy the installer files into the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, which is pretty much where they would have been if I'd let Windows Update download the files over the web in the first place.

So in terms of saving disk space, I don't think the .ISO left me any better off.

Then I tried the option to upgrade. It said I could insert an external drive with 10GB free. So I found a 16GB USB stick, inserted it into the other USB port (the first still had the installer plugged in), selected the drive and clicked Refresh. But it said I still needed to find another 3.5GB (or so - can't remember exact number) on my C: drive.

In the end I just moved off any files I could find which weren't in the system folders, and used the DISM command I mentioned above. This probably freed up the required 3.5GB but no more than that,

I then unplugged all the USBs, Restarted, went into Windows Update and started the update from there and it seemed to complete OK, I think using the files which had been put there when I tried the upgrade from the ISO.

I don't know what the thing about needing to insert a drive with a spare 10GB was about, as I certainly didn't give it that much extra space, and even when I did insert it, it didn't seem to want to use it - I guess this is what the OP was finding?

What do you mean by 29.1 free? It won't be 29.1GB because there'd be nothing left!

In WinDirStat, what are the folders and sizes for everything listed with 1GB or more?

Oh, and Nifty's links will be the ones which you can get from Microsoft's website, which expire after 24 hours. However when I tried it, I don't think having the ISO actually helped me.
