Is there any help trying to update pre installed win10 to anniversary update.

Asus laptop 32g ssp 32 g usb drive.

Ive read various Microsoft forums etc though win10 anniversary update insists in trying to update from internal drive rather than my usb drive.

Think maybe cause Asus laptop was purchased with win10 installed no disk etc.

I'm not really sure what you are asking?
Have you got Windows 10 installed to the internal drive, or on an external USB drive (Windows to Go)? Or both?

Windows will only update it's own installation, so if you want to update the Windows 10 on a USB drive then you'd need to boot into that drive.

To recap, you have created Win 10 Anniversary Update on a usb drive?
From your laptop, navigate to the usb and double click "setup.exe".
You may run into problems because you only have a 32GB ssd in your laptop. there might not be sufficient elbow room to update.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yes I downloaded update to usb as Asus storage is full.
When I choose the exe file from usb drive there isn't any option to install update on the drive I.e win10 insists on installing direct to Asus drive.

Thanks to all replays much as I excepted t.b.h

You'd need to temporaily delete stuff on the main drive to allow enough space for the upgrade to go through.
Then afterwards you could restore it from back-ups.
Think a minimum of 8GB free space is required, when using the Media Creation Tool.

The Windows 10 installer can use a plugged-in USB drive with free space to store Windows.old when upgrading a machine with limited disk capacity like this, which I think might be what the OP is asking about?

Sounding like a lack of free space.

Exactly I thought that a usb drive could be used to increase Asus internal drive from 32gig to 64 gig.

Though with my attempts it seems I,m wrong.

Might have to go the external drive route.

With Asus only 32gb capacity there isn't,t anything to delete to save 8gb drive space.

Not that I have much installed at all as iPad Air suffices.

Windows, even 64bit Windows doesn't take up 32 GB. There must be media you could move or programs you could temporarily uninstall?

Also make sure Recycle bin or System Restore aren't taking up GBs of space.
And use Control Panel to delete any previous Windows installations and Update leftovers.
And if you have hibernation enabled then consider temporarily disabling it, as the hiberfil.sys file can take up GBs.

Consider using a utility like WinDirStat to see where the space could be saved. - https://windirstat.net/

I tried the save disk space and uninstalled what I could.

Think ms office is the only prog anywhere close to 8gb which is required to be free.

Currently trying compress ssd via win10 fthough not convince it will free up 8gb

Why is win10 anniversary update ;8gb seems large for a win update.

It's because it wants to use 8GB to hold your old Windows installation, so you can go back to it (within a limited time period).

I think in theory you should be able to download the Windows ISO installer, ideally to the device itself, then run Setup.exe from the installer. It should complain about the lack of space and ask for a drive to be connected with some free space. But I assume this isn't happening for you?

It's not helpful that so-called '32GB' devices actually have nearer 30GB or less in my experience so there's not much space left.

I'd be interested to know if using WinDirStat or similar as suggested earlier reveals any folders taking up lots of space?
