Parent died and can't find life insurance policy

Hi
My mother in law passed away 2 years ago and we have been through the boxes but can't find her life insurance policy paper work. Is there any way of finding out who it's with and how to claim? I would be very grateful for any help you can give.
Thanks

Are there any bank statements showing payments to an insurance company? Not even wrong0

How do you know that she definitely had insurance?
Old bank statements could show the regular monthly debit, with a company name (or some code of the name that we could help to decipher).

"What if you can’t find the life insurance certificate?
It’s not uncommon for certificates to become lost, particularly as policies tend to be taken out over a long term, and we all know that sometimes paperwork gets lost in the mix.
If you cannot find the policy document and are unsure of the policyholder’s insurer, then the Association of British Insurers (ABI) should be able to help.
At very least, if they cannot locate the policy – and hence the insurance providers you need to contact – they can advise you of what to do next."0 -
She passed away 2 years ago and you're only looking for this now!?
Sorry if I'm being dim but that seems quite a long time to pass, before contacting the insurance co?0 -

My parents had several insurance policies that were paid up - it had been years since they put any money into them - so not seeing payments on bank statements doesn't mean there aren't some policies out there.0 -
Hi thank you for all your replies.
Sparx, we are only looking for it now as my father in law has been dragging his heals and it came to light in a conversation last night that he had not yet sought it out. I have been to his house recently and the place is in a very bad state and he said he has been looking for it for two years. He is one of these people that will not do anything unless he has the paperwork, me on the other hand will do what I need to get things sorted hence my post.
I know she had one as she told us before she died (Cancer) so that's why I believe there to be one.
Thanks again0 -
Although zx81's post shows you how a lost policy can be tracked down, the issue may be that they will probably only deal with the executor. If that's you, then all is good, but if it's your FiL then you will need to persuade him to start the process.0

If its done by post or online, OP can "be" the FIL.0 -
This is a better link to the Association of British Insurers webpage about tracing lost policies -

Unless they ask the OP to explicitly confirm that they are the executor, in which case saying yes could be regarded as fraudulent (although they may not ask, I've never needed to do it so I don't know).0
