The difference in cold water temperature between summer and winter can be quite substantial.

I notice much the same effect using an electric shower in summer vs. winter.

EXACTLY what we find. Electric shower is currently on number 6 on the dial - in summer it's normally around 2-3.
  • We had a neighbour not that many years ago who said that combos were rubbish and at best would last 8 or so years, at the time was had conventional boiler and hot water from a emersion.
Fat forward and we bought a new home with a combi the hot water is at best rubbish and in 5 years it has broken down 5 times.
Our old one was 28 years old only broke once and rarely had it serviced.

Combi's certainly have a reputation amongst some plumbers that they are less reliable than conventional boilers. That said some manufacturers now give their boilers(both types) a 10 year warranty.

Regarding your 28 year old boiler, that would be non-condensing technology which had very little to go wrong. Not so modern condensing boilers that are stuffed full of electronics.
