Dog Hair

We have a black lab, we're always finding hair everywhere!!

I have a deshredding tool, a supplement we add to food yet she still moults. I have taken off 2 carrier bags of hair!!

Do I need to keep going until no more hair is coming off?

Is this something a dog groomer can help with. Fed up with not being able to wear light colour clothes or have a light colour carpet.

Can live with it but wondered if there was something I was missing.

Ha ha....I have same same, but slightly different. We have two large shepherd dogs ( like old English) and we can't wear black! I get tons of hair from them every day.

Hate to tell you it's just part of having a dog (or at least a moulty breed) you can reduce the amount with regular grooming, I find with my GSDs they have to be done at least once a week or their fur comes out in clumps all year not just at moulting times. I try to do it daily when possible, just five minutes on each dog and it does reduce the moulting but it will never stop it completely.

I have a non shedder, don't think I've ever had a hair off him.

Her shedding will end...give it about 12-14 years ;)

Sorry to say, but you've got a double coated dog, shedding is going to be year-round (with a lovely full moult or two thrown in for good measure). Regularly brushing will help - not just to remove the loose hair, but to stimulate the skin/follicles and promote a healthy coat, and a good diet will reduce shedding somewhat, but dog hair in your dinner will become just one of those things (I've even flown to America and still found my dogs' hairs in the hotel carpet, in my dinner, on my paperwork at the office..!)

If it seems excessive or has worsened more than usual, you may want to consider an MOT at the vet - my Rottie x started overtaking my longhaired GSD on shedding, which had never been the case before, and combined with some other physical (and behavioural) symptoms, I had a full blood test done and we discovered she had hypothyroidism - of which excess hair loss is a symptom. But to a degree, shedding will be normal for this breed.

Top tip for multi dog households, get them the same colour.;) I had a white, a white and brown, a golden yellow and a white and black collection at one point:rotfl:. Whatever I wore, I went out looking like a distant relation of a wolf:D.

The only way i can keep on top of the hair my two cavaliers shed is by giving them regular baths and brushing daily.

Its not so easy to bath them in the winter because their coats take forever to dry and they dont like the hairdryer.

I still vaccuum throughout the house daily though.

  • Check the dog for vitamin/mineral deficiency.
It is normal for a dog to moult at certain times of the year but excessive hair loss everyday is usually down to deficiencies.
  • I wonder if buying her a little t-shirt or coat could help?

It could reduce the amount of fur that sticks to you when she brushes past you.
  • I have a french bulldog and his hair gets everywhere! We can't wear white, we have lint rollers in nearly every room and the car!
The best advice I ever got was from an old customer who said she used a 'Furminator' - incredible! It really does work too! The images on their website and Amazon is the kind of thing that comes off of my small (ish) dog.
If there seems to be a lot of dog hair on our leather couch I then know that he needs to be furminated. They seem pricey in Pets at Home - however I did get mine on the Black Friday lightning deal on Amazon for only £13 instead of around £30!! For the stress and less hair, it is definitely worth the buy.
